Stupid issue, I know. But since I would still have some ongoing things in Brazil when I first arrive in Canada, I'd like to get a cellphone asap.

I was wondering, is it possible to get a cellphone (the device, line, plan and all) at Rogers with my passport and landing visa, or would I have to wait for my PR to arrive?

Also, if I'd have to wait, is it possible for my brother (a PR in Toronto) to buy a cellphone and a plan under his name and when I get all my docs I transfer to my name?

Thanks a lot!

1. Don't bother with a cell phone plan right off the bat. Just buy a pay as you go phone at 7/11 while you determine what plan and company suits you requirements.

I agree. You can get a pay as you go plan and take your time to get a "Permanent" cell phone. Keep in mind that Canada has one of the worst records for cell phone plans in the world. they charge a lot, lock you in to 3 years, and are not flexible when your life changes, even if you move to a small town where you can't get a signal (I've heard). I lived in Japan for a while and cell companies are much more civilized (not to mention much better phones sometimes years ahead of Canadian phones!) I can't speak for other countries. Be careful when choosing a plan. Good luck!

There is nothing wrong with using pre-paid if you don't want to be tied down to a contract. The people who do 3 year contracts mostly do it in order to get a free or cheap phone. However, since the new phone is tied to the contract, if you want to cancel the contract, you will need to pay for the phone.
