Dear forum gurus, here is my situation for your review.

I just got a PPR last month through EE CEC, my passport is currently at CPC Ottawa for CoPR issuance and visa stamping. I plan to land in Toronto on February 20th on my way back from the states.

My boyfriend is a US citizen and we’ve been together for a year and a half. This year we have decided to get married and he will be moving to Canada later in the year. We do not want to marry before I land because we can’t afford any risks/delays with my application, so the decision is to get married after I land and then apply through family sponsorship. Since US outland applications take about 4-6 months to process, we should be making it for our target move-in date in October-November this year.

We plan to marry on February 25th in Toronto (5 days after I land). Will there be any problem with that in future? As far as I understand, it doesn’t matter when we get married as long as it’s after the landing but just want to get a second opinion.

Then we are planning to send the application as soon as my PR card arrives and our marriage certificate is ready (both processes take about 8 weeks), hopefully early April. Will I have less chances to be approved as a sponsor in our circumstances? Since I’m a brand new permanent resident and we literally got married right after I landed? Should we be expecting significant delays in processing of our application? Do I have to inform the immigration officer handling my landing that my marital status changes in 5 days?

I think we have enough proof of our relationships (flight bookings for over a year, pictures, text messages, vacation together), we are also thinking about opening a joint account at RBC next time he visits and asking our parents to write us letters for the application.

Thanks a lot for reading all of this.
I understand there is nothing critical about our situation but after doing long distance for so long we really want to get this right and not lose any more time.

Thanks again :)

Are you living together at the moment and if so, how long for? In other words, could you already be common-law partners?

In that case, I really can't see any significant problems that you are likely to face. There is no restriction on how soon after becoming a PR that you can sponsor, under your circumstances. Good luck.

Seconded. There is no minimum time you must be a PR before you can marry someone and apply to sponsor them. As you were clearly living apart during the relationship, there won't be any concerns that you were common-law prior to your landing.
