I have passed the academic training before. I am planning to re-take the IELTS since mine expired in 2006. Can I take the academic module again instead of GT as I would also be using my results to renew my US visascreen (aside from completing my visa application to Canada) ? please help. It would not make sense for me to sit for both exam categories, right?

Yes Academic shall be accepted for immigration to Canada. General Module is easier on reading and writing part.
Edited to

Only General Module will be accepted now. It is now clearly mentioned on the CIC website and they might send the application back if its other than General Module for IELTS.

Hi Rocky,

Just a question since you have a lot of knowledge. The CIC website now says only General Module will be accepted. Below is the link, can you please tell if its right or they are still accepting both academic and general.

it makes sense for them to accept academic module in place of general training since the former is harder. but, i just wanted to make sure.

OOPS.

They have changed this clause as well now. Thanks for the mention. Yes only academic will be accepted as they have points based as per the Academic Module. I think they have refined the system now more.

Thanks again

Hi,

Check the link i posted, its says General, Since Listening & Speaking is same in both modules so CIC has mentioned that Reading & Writing should be in General which means the overall test should be General Training not Academic.

Submit only General and sit again for IELTS. I know you must be thinking it is not logical but from CIC's perceptive, they have their points based system evaluation for language ability in English by IELTS test in General module only & Academic being a tough module cannot be compared with the same points being awarded as for general so that is why they have now made it clear.

Better to be safe.

Hi rocky272727 & Saki,

I have sent my full docs to Singapore Visa Office on 23 May, 2010 and I got 2 AOR from CHC Singapore Office on 02 June 2010.
At that time visa offices were accepting both the Academic and General training. I then submitted the academic IELTS result with my full docs . But now I came to know that, according to new rule, they are only accepting General Training.

Is this new rule applicable for the new applicants who will be applying after 26 June or for all?

Can they return my application now on the basis of new rule? (eventhough i got 2AOR on 02 June,2010)

I am really stressed out!!

Regards.

Hi Sumon,

You are safe nothing to worry about, this new rule apply to those who will be sending their applications after 26th June. And those applicants whose applications are already with CIC ( like yours) they are still under old rules. You are fine to have Academic IELTS.
