Hello all,
I have been offered admission into the graduate program at a recognised Canadian university. I completed my M.Sc. in 2009 and thereafter have worked for almost 3 years. I'm from India and I went to apply for a study permit with VFS Global. Now they are asking me which category should I apply to:
1) General
2) University
3) SPP
Please note that I would be provided with funding for the first year which should be renewed depending on my performance. I am infact going for a Ph.D. program. University scholarship would be the way of funding my education there and that's the information I have provided therein.
Kindly advice me which category should I apply to. Neither VFS Global nor the Canadian High Commission could help me in this regard. Please treat this as urgent. Please help.

Which university accepted you? Pls confirm to make sure your institution is not listed here. If your institution is a participating ACCC members then you'll need to apply under the SPP.

I have been accepted by the University of Victoria. I checked out that UVic is a member of AUCC. So that would let me allow either under General or University category. As I have mentioned before, I will be funded by the university. I can show that as a source if funding I believe. Do I need to submit a medical document while applying for the Visa? I checked on the website that a pre-medical is not mandatory and can be undergone later as well. Thanks

Please check above the sentence highlighted in red ink. I guess you're trying to say Uni of V is not a member of AUCC. So then you're applying under the general category. You may apply online should it be possible to scan all your supporting documents and your passport (bio page and other pages containing previous visas and stamps if any). You may submit an up-front medical report, but not compulsory during the initial submission. If you don't and your application passes the first screening process, the visa officer will request for it. Although submitting up-front medical report facilitates the entire process, if you're money concious then proceed when the visa officer asks you to do so.

UVic is a member of AUCC. I can apply under university category, but I heard somewhere that for applying under university category, I must have completed my last degree 2 years before I get admitted. Please clarify. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Do I need to purchase a GIC or something of that sort? I would be provided with a scholarship of CAD$24,000 approx for my first year of study. I think that should be enough to suffice for living and tuition fees. Would the offer letter detailing the scholarship be sufficient for the visa application?

Your inbos is full! Pls read the message here:
This should be a personal decision. If you're very sure that the embassy is likely to approve your study permit application, then why not submit up-front medical report! Anyway, I didn't submit up-front medical report. I did it when I got the letter to do so. So my application approval delayed a little bit. It's not all that expensive at your place, then try doing up-front medical report. It's valid for one year and if refused yu=ou can still use it to apply again. But I hope you'll get approved since you're going to pursue PhD with full funding. Good luck

How much time would the entire visa process take then? I'm just worried about that.

Pls refer to the comments by Regina. Your university isn't a member if I'm right. So apply under the general.

The length of the entire process depends on several factors such as:
the visa office you're submitting your application to;
the number of applications made within the same time period;
the completeness of your application;
your overall eligibility and how strong your application is;
confirmation of authencity of documents submitted if required;
and other factors.

So there is no guarantee that ones application time frame will be the same as the other. Just fill in your application forms completely and provide the visa office with all the necessary documents. I think you should be fine.
