Guys, I badly need your help and clarifications. We are arranging documents but this options really confuses us.

I have a common-law partner (of course we are not married) for 8 years now. His (my partner) sister (who lives in winnipeg, manitoba for more than 2 years now) and brother in law (for four or 5 years I believe) offers sponsorship for our family.

Questions:

1. I will be the Principal applicant (better scores in point systems than my partner). My dependents would be my common-law partner and son (5 years old). Which option to choose now? General or family stream?

Should I choose General Stream, because we are not married and just appear as a "Friend" of my partner's sister (sister in law supposedly. But yes, we have known each other since we we're in Elementary days) in Manitoba? Or CIC will consider me as a legitimate member of the family (as a sister now, because my common-law partner is her real brother) even we are not married? I am really confused, I'm sorry and thanks in advance for your help!

2. Where to submit online applications? I heard it can be via mail or online.

Hi Summer14,

Looking at your questions above, please see my suggestions:

As per question from the above details I think you can qualify for both streams (either general or family). General in the sense that you it seems you be able to get 2 people (friends) to sign your MAS and under that you can have your common-law partner to be part of your application PROVIDED that you can proof that you have been cohabited with your partner for a period of at least 12 continous months and you need to provide the following documents listing both your names e.g copies of joint bank statement of account, copies of leases, utility bills etc. Although if you go the family stream it seems quicker and faster to get LOA and you can apply online. And I also believe if you claim common-law partner the requirement will be for you to proof your ties as I have indicated above. In summary family should be fine (my opinion)

2. You can submit family application online. Go to http://www.immigratemanitoba.com/how-to-immigrate/dependants/

Hope that helps

Thank you Believing.

Another question: If In apply under General Stream, I understand I need IELTS - is there any minimum grades to achieve?

On the other hand, under Family Stream--do I still need IETLS?

Thank you!

I did not have to write IELTS under general stream but I don't know about family lets wait for other senior to comment possibly. I am assuming your first language is English.

Hi there. If I may share some inputs, under general stream where IELTS is generally required, a score of 5 is enough. People say that is quite easy to achieve. For family stream, it is not mandatory. If your education's medium of instruction is in English, you may just submit certificates from your secondary and post-secondary (and post graduate if applicable) schools. Also a certificate from your employer that English is also being used as a medium of communication on the workplace will also help. If you can meet these requirements, you may not take IELTS. However, there is a forum member who applied under family stream but did not submit school and work certificates. They were required by MPNP to submit IELTS. Hope this helps!
