I am a masters student from Britain who is currently on leave since Jan 2018. I moved back to the UK in January. I have a study permit that expires 30/07/18. I plan to return to school in Canada in September 2018. I would also like to return for a few months before then, in July 2018, to be with my fiance (a Canadian citizen). Before leaving in Jan 2018 I had been in Canada for 7 years on a mixture of study and work permits.

Since my current permit was issue and I went on leave, I legally changed my name, and changed the gender on my passport, in May 2018. This is not reflected on my study permit.

- if I return to Canada before I receive my extension, can I do so as a visitor in July, as a visa-exempt UK citizen?

I'm not sure if my study permit is still valid for entry, as I am on leave and it does not reflect that on my passport. I have entered Canada for a 2 week vacation, in May, with my new passport. Now it is a longer trip I wonder if it could be a problem.

- How does my name and gender change affect the process for applying for a visa extension? And is the current visa invalidated as I went on leave, so I will need to apply for a new one?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Were you on "Authorized Leave" from your university? If not, the university would have reported you as a no show, which means that your study permit would have been cancelled.

If your study permit is still valid, you can apply for an extension in your new name/gender, provided you have the required documents for the name change. If your study permit is no longer valid, you need to apply for a new one.

Your study permit is probably no longer valid as you have not been actively persuing your studies so you would need to apply anew so the other issue will solve themselves since its a new application.

Hi! I did go on authorized leave, I didn’t just stop turning up to class :)
