Hello everyone! first I would like to say sorry for posting this because I am sure there is 100;s other post like this, but every case is usually different. Okay so I am from New York and I am a US citizen who will be traveling to Montreal early next year (2015) for a close friends bachelor party. the only problem is that I have a criminal record from about 3 years ago. It is only a misdemeanor conviction not a felony, but I don't think that helps. The conviction in attempted assault, I was involved in an altercation were I was put into a position to defend myself. Long story short I want to know before hand if what's my chances of gaining entry across the boarder. Is it better to fly or drive? And is there anything I can do before hand to help my case to be granted access? the last thing I want is to travel with everyone and be embarrassed at the border, thank you.

I don't think anyone can tell you what your chances are of entering Canada successfully. If you want to avoid being embarrassed, I would travel alone because there's certainly a chance you may be turned away. If they do tell you that you are inadmissible to Canada then you can ask to apply for a TRP (temporary residency permit). A TRP allows those who are otherwise inadmissible to Canada to enter for a period of time. I believe the cost of a TRP is $200. No guarantee they will agree / approve. But it's worth a try if you are stopped.

If you want to try to do something about this situation in advance, then I supposed you can try applying for the TRP in advance of your trip.

Thank you so much for your quick response, I think that is my only option if I do go, is to travel alone so in the case of being denied I can just return home, and thank you I will look into the Forum and try to apply ahead of time
