Hi,

I want to ask how much does it effect to have g1 driving license and a bank account from Ontario, to become a tax resident? How can we cancel the g1 driving license, as we don't usually drive anyways? What about bank accounts? Should we close them? If yes how can we close them?

Are you no longer in Ontario?
We just did a soft landing, did not mean to settle as yet. By mistake we got g1 liscense. Did not know any better. We dont even drive or have driven a car before or plan to learn in our early 30s. Bank accounts were needed to be able to move. No we left Ontario/Canada after 10 days, we wanted to move next year.

You sat and wrote a licensing exam, paid a fee, and had your photo taken by mistake?

You won't be considered tax residents if you have no residential ties to Ontario.

Thank you so much for taking interest in my question. Yes it was not that kind of a mistake. I mean people tell to be cautious to not create bank accounts or driving liscense while you do soft landing. Unfortunately I read about those advices after I did my soft landing. So to be very clear, even if we could not cancel this g1 or close our accounts we wont be considered tax resident because of not having significant residential ties?

Correct. You can just let the license lapse. Don't worry about the bank accounts, unless you're paying fees on them. But you may need to be there in person to close them.

Bank account alone (for example for online shopping) or a "Toy driving licence" (given how easy you can get both). are not enough to identify you as a tax resident. However if there would be other ties on a borderline, these could tip the scale. So do not worry about those 2
