Hey y'all,

So I am sure this question has been asked numerous times but I need some opinions.
Here is a small bit of our story,
I meet my current boyfriend over a year ago as we worked on a cruise line. He is a Indian citizen and I am Canadian by birth. I have already gone to India and meet his family and even stayed in their home for close to 14 days. We also shared a cabin on our last contract on the ships. We then went through the process of applying for a visitor visa which he received multiple entry until 2024, I believe is the expiry. We applied during our time on the ships and declared him as residing in USA since he is on a C1D visa to work for the ships. He came to Canada for 14 days and we plan for me to go back to India for another 2 weeks, at which time we plan to discuss marriage with his parents.
Now, our plan was to do sort of a eloped marriage on the beach off the cruise ship. I always wanted a beach wedding and it would be my dream come true. Our parents would not be there as we just want a simple, quiet wedding that is fairly cheap. Then when we have a little more money, we plan to do the traditional hindu wedding.
My main question is, would CIC see this eloped marriage without family as a red flag?? And since he will be working in the states at the time that we apply, do we still state he lives in India or can we state he is in USA? and if we apply from within Canada, does anyone know a time frame on approval for an Open work permit? I have heard 6-9 months but then on Dec 15th, they are changing the process and making it all quicker. I know before we had a wait time of 18 months from outside Canada and now its 12 months either way of applying.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the repetitive question

I can't say how CIC will view an eloped marriage - on it's own I can't imagine it being a problem but depending on the other circumstances it could be. If you do elope, on you application you should definitely explain your reasons for doing so and your plans for a traditional wedding in the future. In our case, we are having a second wedding in Canada when we arrive because only three members of my large family were able to attend our wedding in Brazil, which was a courthouse ceremony (not the traditional church ceremony that is important to me) - of course we explained this in our application, along with any other things we thought might be red flags (no honeymoon, no engagement party, not many emails exchanged, etc.). A lot of these explanations were done in response to specific questions, but others were addressed in a cover letter style or as part of the response to the question about the development of our relationship. Our application is still being processed but I feel confident that we provided enough evidence of a genuine relationship.

For where he lives, I would put his residence at the time of applying.

I don't know about the OWP wait times.

Hi

It shouldn't be a red flag, as you already have an established relationship and technically lived together on the ship. Write an explanation letter about why you chose to have the small wedding and about the plans for the future wedding; this is especially important if you are of Indian descent, as small weddings are outside of the cultural norm for India. I would get letters from both sets of parents confirming that they supported the wedding and relationship in general.

State that he is in the US. The app will most likely be processed in New Delhi regardless.

To apply from within Canada, you both need to actually be here and remain here throughout the process. No one can say for sure about how long it would be for the OWP, as we are all waiting to see what happens with the new changes.
