I'm currently living in Canada with my Canadian common law spouse. We are sending in our application for PR in about a week. In the meantime, I also need to apply to change my temporary work permit (which expires on June 19 of this year) to a visitor visa. I've got the entire application filled out but am a bit confused/concerned about what to put in the section for "funds available for your stay".

My spouse is working full time and has been supporting us with no issues for the past year - we have several thousand dollars in his work savings (stocks, whatever your equivalent to a US 401k is, pension plan stuff etc etc), but we have like...zero savings in a regular account. Unfortunately our dogs have been really expensive this year (like, $8,000 expensive) and has depleted our savings.

Should I just put the amount as 0? Should I count his work savings toward that? I have letters from him and his parents saying that I'll be taken care of financially while I wait on my PR - is that enough? Will I be denied if I put that we currently have no regular savings?

1.When I renewed my visitor visa, i sent photocopies of my husband recent pay stubs (two of them) and balance of my bank account which was only $1000.
I did not send balance of saving account.
think letters from your partner and his parents would be good and if you can get balance of his saving account, they would help too.

2.you are sending your application for PR soon (inland or outland), so you could send photocopy of receipt from carrier or canada post to prove you applied for PR already.
I also wrote a letter on separate sheet of paper saying that I applied for PR (outland ) and wanted to stay with my family and wait for pr etc.

I would not put $0 as your funds!!! That will not look good to CIC. I believe what I did was provide a letter of employment from my boyfriend stating his hours and salary. I did provide a screenshot of the money he has in his bank account but I think I would have been okay without that. The letters you have from him and his parents are good too, but definitely get his employer to write a letter with his salary info.

Good luck, and I hope your doggies are okay health-wise!

Well, I would just leave it blank and then leave the supporting documents to show that I have people to support me, but its a required section so I have to put a number. I'm just confused about what to put!

Here's a wacky idea:

Submit an Inland application along with an Open Work Permit application before your WP expires. This will give you implied status (as a visitor) and the OWP (in ~ 4 months)...BUT...the overall processing time for your PR would be ridiculous (~ 2 years, compared to ~ 8 months if you submit the Outland application).

This is only worth even considering, if you want to be able to work ASAP and you want a worry-free way to extend your stay, since the OWP gives you implied status automatically (doesn't require approval).

Having said that...Outland makes waaaay more sense for an American. Does the answer to the section require a numeric entry, or can you enter alpha characters, such as `spouse will support me' (or similar)?

Haha yeah, wacky. No, we're definitely doing outland. 8ish months wait is a hell of a lot better than 2+ years. I want to go back to school, so I don't want to wait that long.

But to answer someone elses question, no, I cannot leave it blank - it's required and you can only input numbers into that section.

Don't put zero. The funds available are the funds he will have every month to support the two of you, so I would put his monthly salary. Then in a letter explain it is his monthly salary, with pay stubs. And add the letters as further proof. You could also include a copy of his investment accounts - his work savings.

As said above, use his expected income and include a few payslips. However, I would not put down his monthly earnings. Calculate the total amount he will earn in the time you are requesting, i.e. he makes $1000/month and you are asking for a 6 month extension, then you would put $6000.

Yes, the above sounds like a good idea.
