Hello all,

I am currently a PhD student in Canada receiving RA and TA payments. One of the professors in our lab has received a grant for a joint project with a company, and he is considering me for it. This is a full-time position, and I need to spend three days a week physically at the company. I have some questions:

1) Is this considered on-campus work? Can I work full-time? I think my contract would be with the university itself.
2) Can I spend a few days a week at the company? Would that violate the on-campus conditions?
3) Is the part-time hours going to be increased to 24 hours in September? I know that the minister of immigration said it would in Fall 2024, but I have not been able to find any exact starting date for this new policy.

Appreciate any help in advance!

What does your study permit state about working? Is it tied to your graduation? You are not working on campus. Hours increase September 1 (I believe) for 24 hours per week so that is your option.

But what about this part on CIC's website?

You can work at other locations if
  • you’re working as a teaching or research assistant and
  • your work is strictly related to a research grant
In this case, you may work at a library, hospital or research facility associated with your school, even if they’re outside the campus. If you work at a hospital or other place where the protection of public health is important, you’ll need to have a medical exam, unless you’ve already had one.

Do you have any link to the September 1st thing? All I can find is them saying they intend to increase it in Fall 2024.

So you have a research grant and working at a research facility?

Yes, a professor I know at our university has received some research grant for a joint project with a tech company. The grant has been transferred to my university, so I will be paid by the university still. However, I will probably need to go to the company's offices some days.
