A Query for How much money to bring while entering Canada - Re-posting

  • There is no limit to bring money to Canada by a PR
  • You need to declare at immigration check that you hold more than $10,000
  • It is not mandatory to bring/carry the same amount that you showed at the time of filling/showing Financial Proof (forms)
  • Other money if less than $10000 you can carry a travelers cheque/DD or even can transfer money later on when you are settled
  • Immigration Check team/people will sure make sure that you have enough money for 1 year survival before you are landing
  • This thing they will conclude by few basis questions in form of small interview at time of immigration check
  • The money you have showed POF or intending to carry are already taxed, so whenever you bring to Canada in some part of full, those amount will always be non taxable in Canadian terms and accounts
  • In case of transferring huge amounts, one need to prove that all part of it is already taxed within your origin country

Per PP under/equal $10,000 cash are allowed, if intending to carry more than $10,000 cash - Immigration check/verification process at airport becomes lengthy.

Does the 10,000 limit apply only to cash/DD/cheques/traveller cheques/etc. that we are carrying? Or if our POF is >10,000 (which it will be in case of dependents), then we must declare that first?

Also, (how) should we declare property assets at time of landing?

Guys,

One doubt. Please let me know which is true.

1. After we get PER and the file gets transferred to local VO, Do background checks get initiated and once that is clear does the file get assigned to a VO for further processing and is that when we get "We started processing your file on XX date".

2. After we get PER and the file gets transferred to local VO, Does the file just sit there idle in the registry waiting for some officer to pick it up and start and one s/he starts we get the line ""We started processing your file on XX date".

Reason i am asking is we received our second line update on Feb 16th Saying that "We started processing your file on 12 Feb ". But till now no verification calls/mails have been made to my wife's company as she is primary, However NDVO had called her to verify the credentials of an ex employee who is applying for student visa.

Any thoughts on this.
in simple terms, bg check gets initiated after vo is assigned. It is then that we see 2nd line update. Once bg check is completed we get mr and rprf request.
It is not always necessary that physical or telephonic checks are done for bg. If vo is satisfied about your file, they may decide to not do physical and telephonic verifications.

Please do verify the POF (proof of funds) before you plan to land -
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/funds.asp

Refer/bookmark this as well = http://travel.gc.ca/returning/customs/what-you-can-bring-home-to-canada
Arriving with $10,000 or more - para on the above link

If you are carrying more than C$10,000, tell a Canadian official when you arrive in Canada. If you do not tell an official, you may be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:

•cash
•securities in bearer form (for example, stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills) or
•negotiable instruments in bearer form (for example, bankers' drafts, cheques, travellers' cheques or money orders).

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/funds.asp

And at the Declaration Card you are asked to declare all ...you also have to declare currency ... totaling CAN$10,000.00 or more. Failure to do so could result in penalties, seizure and/or prosecution.

CBSA = Canada Border Services Agency

If you fail to declare currency or monetary instruments (signed travellers cheques, bonds, etc) EQUAL TO OR MORE THAN $10000 CAD, then it will be seized under the "proceeds of crime (money laundering) and terrorist financing act".

If you have LESS than that, you have no requirement to declare it. You may be asked to show it as part of the Immigration interview.
