Hi Folks

I got my visa and I did my landing too. As we know if we want to apply for the citizenship you have to fulfil the condition of staying in Canada for at least 3 years during 5 years.

My question is from when the 5 years will be count down, is it from the date you got the visa or from the date of your landing.

Your replies are much appreciated.

Cheers,
Zaid

Certainly not the date you got the visa.

I think it is from the date you land. However, we landed 30 August 2011, but my PR card is issued 11 Oct 2011 and expires 11 Oct 2016.

Whether this needs renewing before the landing date, or whether it can wait until the PR expiration date, I have no idea. Given it could take a while to get it renewed I'd make sure I got it renewed in plenty of time before the 5 years anniversary of the landing date.

As Cappicino said, I think its from the date of landing.
You get your PR card's validity started the day you landed but they deliver it after completing some official steps

Sorry I just noticed the part about citizenship.

To apply for Citizenship you need to be a permanent resident and been living in Canada for 3 years (1095 days) during the past FOUR years (not 5). I understand part of your time spent before getting residency, if under TWP etc, can possibly be counted.

But anyway - it's basically 3 from 4 years for citizenship, 2 from 5 years to renew residency.

Most people will probably apply for citizenship before their PR expires, but the citizenship process can take over a year, so sometimes there is some overlap!
