Freelance work outside my closed work-permit

Hi,

I am mid-application for my PR through PNP (from New Zealand), so currently on a closed work-permit. My application is in-progress and hopefully not far from approval.
I get that I am not allowed to register a business in Canada to do freelance work (until I have my PR), but is there any other work around for me rather than turning down the work? Would I be allowed to open up shop as a NZ business and continue working here on the side? Or does my closed-work permit ban any work outside my current employer, regardless of where the business is registered, and regardless of if it is a paid job or not?

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

Do you have your business registered in New Zealand? Why not continue that business (since its freelance), and redirect your funds to NZ as well in the process? You could use your NZ visa debit card linked to your NZ bank account to withdraw cash in Canada, or PayPal transfer that money.

Just offering a few workarounds, since as soon as you involve Canadian rules to anything, it becomes far too complicated!

You could register a business in New Zealand, and do work remotely for clients outside of Canada. But you wouldn't be able to do work (either paid or unpaid) for any Canadian clients while in Canada.

Agreed. You can do freelance work provided it's not for a Canadian client or any company that does buisness in Canada / with Canadian clients. Working on any projects where Canadian clients are involved is the part that's illegal. It does not matter if the job is paid or not.

Please advice, since you are familiar with freelancing. I'm outside of Canada, and will apply for PNP. My employer is is writing recommendation letter for me, but we are not sure should we mention that he knows me because I was freelancing for him for an year and that is why he wants me in Canada working for him? thanks

You can't sell to anyone in Canada.
