Hello.

My name is Jeff. I live and work in Japan. I need some advice/guidance in filling out the IMM 5481 form.

I am currently unemployed. I have constantly worked when in Japan, but the contract for my last job as a translator ended on May 31st. I worked for this company for 1.5 years. Before I took this job, I worked for five (5) years translating and teaching English for a small rural town. I have been doing freelance work at home, but I would like a steady income again. I have been hired at another job starting August 31st.

My question:

For question 2, should I choose UNEMPLOYED and then state how I have been supporting myself in a letter? Should I mention everything I wrote above? Plus, should I state that my wife has been taking on the load since I have been employed (the wife has a good career as a teacher)?

Thank you in advance. Any comments/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Take care,

Jeff

I suppose you could, and if you submit your application before Aug 31 technically you wouldn't be lying, and it seems you feel that perhaps you should . . . BUT . . . may we all know why you feel it is in your best interests to do so? Or is it just that you plan to submit before the 31st?

Either way, just tell it like it is!

truesmile,

Thank you for a quick response. My wife and I were planning on submitting before August 31st. I would rather wait, but the wife is headstrong. I don't think we will - I still need to collect some documents: Letters from the family stating our intents, etc.

Do you have anything stating your employment starting Aug 31st? If so, photocopy it and include it with the application. There is no income requirement for spousal sponsorship so the fact your currently unemployed won't have anything to do with you being approved or not. Of course include that your wife has a good job etc... show your back employment history everything you think will help your case include it. GL!

Hi Creampop,

I have emails stating when training starts and a welcome to the company email. I was thinking of just saying I was unemployed and provide a letter about my past employers. The reason - I really don't want to work for the company that offered me the job. However, a job is a job. It will be for 8 months. The company I left contacted me about a two month job coming up. I would like to do it, but then I will be back where I am - no job. I want to make money and bank it.
