Hello, my partner and I are applying under the Family Class. I am sponsoring him (he's British). We're a bit confused as to what to do for form 5406, section A.

My husband has never known or had any form of contact with his biological father. However, his mother currently has a long term common-law partner. To my husband, this is his step-father. However, he has never actually been formally adopted, so there is no legal standing here.

For information and marital status for biological father we put unknown, and have attached a letter explaining that he does not know his biological father's information.

However, for his mother, the marital status is listed as common law. I worry that this will be confusing. Should we list his "unofficial' step-father anywhere in the forms?

Any insight you could provide would be helpful.

Thank you

Sounds like you've done everything properly. Yes, it's probably a good idea to just include in that letter of explanation info and short text about the step-father and that this is the common-law partner referred to in her status.

No need to worry, it's not that unusual.
