Foreign Work Experience While Working in Canada – PR Eligibility?

Hi there,

I am currently working at Accenture, Toronto, as a Technical Support Engineer (Onsite). I started on a six-month contract (July 15 – Jan 15) and was later made permanent.

As my contract was nearing completion, I began job hunting in both Canada and India in November. Fortunately, I secured a remote position in India as a Technical Sales Specialist with XYZ Company, starting mid-December. This role involves consultancy, sales, and customer support, allowing me to work from home. Since January, I have been working both jobs simultaneously.

I have a few questions regarding this situation:
  1. Can I legally work two jobs at the same time?
  2. Since my India-based job is remote and paid in INR, can I include this experience in my PR application?
  3. If yes, would it count as foreign work experience for immigration purposes?
Any guidance, resources, or relevant contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Shreyash Ankam

1. You can do whatever you want.
2. If you are not working for a Canadian company and don’t want to count your Canadian experience then sure. You cannot count both Canadian and foreign experience for the same time. You include it on income taxes when filing.
3. It is foreign experience unless company has a Canadian office with Canadian employees and clients.

Thank you for your prompt response, @Naturgrl. I have a follow-up question regarding your second point: "You cannot count both Canadian and foreign experience for the same time. You include it on income taxes when filing."

If I have filed income tax returns for both jobs—one in Canada and one in India—would I be eligible to count both experiences separately?

Additionally, I came across an article by an immigration lawyer stating the following:

Question: Can an applicant accumulate foreign and Canadian work experience at the same time?

Answer: An applicant may claim concurrent work experience for two full-time jobs—one in Canada and one performed remotely from outside Canada. Depending on their qualifications, the system may award CRS skill transferability points for foreign work experience and CRS core points for Canadian work experience simultaneously. However, the system does not grant additional Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) selection points for work experience exceeding 30 hours per week.

To add more details,

1. Accenture > Technical Support Engineer > NOC 22221 > Canada
2. XYZ > Technical Sales Specialist > NOC 62100 > India

So seems like you can do that which is a new rule.

Hi,

I am currently on PGWP and about to complete 1 year of Canadian Experience (1st May 2024 to 30th April 2025) as a Software Developer.
I have received a job offer from remote work from India as a Software Developer starting March 3rd 2025 and I can work them for 32 hours a week. I will be paid in INR in to an Indian bank account and the company doesn't have any location in Canada.

1. Can I continue working for both Canadian and Foreign entities?
2. If I would like to claim points for only foreign work experience for the next year, how should I enter my profile? Can I ignore the second year Canadian experience in the profile until I get an ITA and can I add it later in personal history of actual application?
3. To avoid the overlapping months of experience, can I add the foreign work as a start date from May 1st and wait until next May, even though my offer letter and experience letter says that my joining date is March 3rd
4. Has anyone successfully claimed the points for remote foreign work experience while residing inside Canada, and successfully got their PR?
