It is said to be best to carry forex in various ways including cash, travelers check/cheque and travelers card. Say like carry $500 cash, $2000 or so by travelers check/cheque and $2500 by travelers card.

Travelers card works like a debit card and can be availed from couple of banks like ICICI Bank or AXIS Bank. One can withdraw funds in all major currencies from any ATM(currency of which country is available). It can also be swiped. They are available in Master Card/VISA/American Express but most convenient one is VISA as its widely accepted plus it allows withdrawals in more currencies unlike MC/AE.

But this card can only be purchased within a week of the travel date. Approximate daily withdrawal limit of the same is $800.

Once in Canada, your college/university will help you out opening bank account there.

I think the limit on Cash amount that u can carry is 10000$.So u can use a combination of cash,Travellers cheque, And travellers card.I u have an account with any of the big banks you can get the amount converted against the amount in ur account.

I had a chat with my seniors and they advised atleast to have 5000$ with u.

Hi,

For your money, it's better to have ‘Traveller's Cheque (American Express). You can easily redeem TC anywhere in Canada. You can buy TC from any nearest ICICI/Thomos Cook branch, Mumbai (you can try in Thomas cook branch office near Kalaghoda, Churchgate railway station). You MUST ask for CAD in denominations of less than $50.

And also, bring coins ($1 loonies, $2 toonies), you will need coins for traveling by bus and also for many general purpose of daily usage.

For you further reference I quote one of my previous post;

Hi,

1. It's better to carry one sleeping bag and one adventure back-pack. I personally believe that it's really important to have one good quality sleeping bag.

2. Keep in mind the appliances/electronic equipment (of INDIA) is NOT compatible with Canadian electricity (110 volts), so you may need to carry one voltage converter. You may also need a plug adapter. You can these items from any electronic shop in Chandigarh.

3. It's also better to keep a one/two month supply of general medications which you may require in case of normal trouble.

4. For your money, it's better to have ‘Traveller's Cheque (American Express). You can easily redeem TC anywhere in Canada. You can buy TC from any nearest ICICI/Thomos Cook branch. You MUST ask for CAD in denominations of less than $50.

5. And also, bring coins ($1 loonies, $2 toonies), you will need coins for traveling by bus and also for many general purpose of daily usage.

6. Take all of your academic, work experience, and other achievements certificates. (if any). You may need it at the time of internship/or a possible co-op term

7. It's better to bring at least one full business suit. (especially for business students)

8. It's better to buy heavy winter clothes in Canada. You will find much better deal/offer mainly around Christmas. Of course they are of much better quality.

9. Take the print out of the map for travelling to your destination in Canada.

10. Plan your flight to reach at your destination before 5-6pm.

11. It's also good if you come at least 1 week in advance (if it is possible for you).

12. You can also bring your driver's license. It's valid for International students. (only for a short duration)

13. And yes, you MUST keep one photocopy of all of your documents like PP, LOA etc and keep it separate from your originals.

14. And finally be prepared to face a “Cultural Shock”. Most of the students find it quite stressful to experience something too different. (Your excitement won't stay forever with you). Most probably for the first time you are going to live away from your family, so you can't underestimate the challenges which you are certainly going to face in Canada. You better think of an Immigrant life facing challenges in an unknown country.

Good luck

Hi,

There is NO restriction in carrying more thn CAD 10,000. If you arrive in Canada with CAD 10,000 surplus, you MUST declare/disclose the amount to the immigration and that's all.

@enfield, our Indian Drivers license is okay? I thought we need to get the International License from local RTO office, even that one is valid for one year.

Hi,

Yes, It should be an international license from the concerned local RTO, but I am not sure if it’s valid for 1 year. I thought it’s valid for 6 months only (I just presumed). Well I am not sure of it's validity. Since I am taking my own enfield to Canada so I must check it out.

You are some real enfield lover bro ;). I actually checked all this information regarding its validity in August, I will be going to the local RTO this week to get one. Also my current license isn't in a good condition so I will get a new local one as well.

Hi,

I think International Driver License is valid for 1 month (as a minimum) and it depend on province’s rules and regulations for its continuity. I think it’s better to refer the official website of the transport office of the concerned province.

@royalsting

Each province have their own requirement, i think you should each province website for this info.
But I can tell you about Saskatchewan province, they recognize international license for three months and if you can complete your driving hours in these three months without any problem, you can directly apply for license without taking any classes or exam.
