That is not correct. Read below:

Permanent residents

You must provide one of the following primary documents:

Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This is the only acceptable document if your claim was processed in Canada.

Confirmation of Permanent Residence AND visa counterfoil affixed to a foreign passport or a travel document

Confirmation of Permanent Residence AND foreign passport for visa exempt countries

Record of Landing issued before June 28, 2002.

Verification of landing. This document is provided when an original of the Record of Landing or the Confirmation of Permanent Residence is not available (i.e. lost, misplaced, etc.).

Status Verification, also known as "Verification of Status", is considered an acceptable document to support the client's status in Canada when applying for a replacement SIN card or updating the SIN record.

from visa exempt countries.. does that mean my partner can't get his SIN card with his passport because he needs a visa to visit Canada? So he needs to wait for his PR card before he can work?

Once he lands in Canada with his PR, he has everything he needs in order to work: a COPR and a passport.

Your partner will need COPR and Passport to get SIN#, he will have both documents when he lands in Canada as PR

Foxxbbe....my husband landed November 9th in Toronto and he got is PR card yesterday....you should have yours anytime now. :)

I got my PR card within 61 days.

Took about 11 weeks for me, thats still in the 3 months periode though. If it takes over 3 months to come, contact them.

I landed a few days before you and i just got it yesterday, so you should get it soon, maybe the next 2-3 weeks by latest
