Hi Leon,

I got a letter from the CIC stating that my PR card is ready for pick up, but I have to go through a residency assessment first. One of the things that they told me I need to bring with me on the day of the assessment is the following:

* All passports and travel documents (Current & Expired)

I have all my expired passports, but I will not have my original current passport at the time of the assessment because it is being renewed in the embassy. So my questions are

1. Would that be an issue?
2. Would a copy of the passport suffice? (They already have that as part of my original application)
3. If not, what can I do?

Note: I have a flight booked on the 16th of April and I would really like to make it.

Thanks Leon

Best regards,

Maddy

Hi,

When they ask for something, they only need that, and not copies. I suppose you have been given a time of 6 months, so you can wait until you receive your passport and then go to them.

There is no point going to them without what they are asking.

Hope this answers.

Wish you all the best.

Hi Sammy,

it would be nice to have 6 months, but they gave me 20 days only :)

Hi, did they give you a specific appointment date and time, or just stated within 20 days?
In either case you can write to them asking for more time which they will be obligated to give you, provided they receive your request within the time limit of 20 days. What they are not obligated to do is however any extension for more than 6 months time to show them the requirements. This is my understanding, check with others as well before taking any action in this regard. Wishing you best of luck.

Hi Sammy,

Yes they've given me a specific time/date to show up.

I don't intend to postpone the appointment. What I intend to do is to show up with all the documentation they requested except for the original current passport, however, I intend to present them with a notarized copy of the original current passport which clearly shows the date the passport has been notarized. What do you think?

Show up with everything you have and hope it's enough. If not, then you will likely need another appointment once you have your passport back.

Thanks for your reply Leon,

From your response, it doesn't seem like there is a full-proof plan for doing this, and I certainly do not want to deal with a grouchy CIC officer who will stick to this one requirement to not bother with reviewing the rest of the evidence. Not to mention the air ticket that i might potentially lose if I wanted to reschedule it on short notice if they decide to reschedule my appointment after 50 years (sarcasm intended).

I asked my embassy to return my soon-to-expire passport...
