For how long can one stay outside of Canada on Work Permit?

Hello Everyone,
I have a 3 year Open work permit. My grand father is bed ridden and he needs care so I have left for my home country. I can not return to Canada for an indefinite period of time.

Is there a ruling on the amount of time one can stay outside of Canada on an open work permit? Or one can simply return any time before the work permit expires?

I would be really grateful if someone can provide a link to an official ruling.....

You can return as long as you have a valid Visa, so the work permit AND the Visa both need to be valid.

In most cases, they have the same expiry date.

It should say directly on the Visa in your passport what the expiry date is. A Visa and a Work Permit are two separate things, so most likely if you got your work permit in Canada they didn't automatically give you a Visa. Make sure you have BOTH!

They are usually of the same duration, and up till the validity date of your passport or 3 years.....which ever comes before
