For haver and anyone with private health insurance knowledge

Hello! I just posted a question about purchasing private health insurance for my 5 year old, who will be living with us in Canada (we are citizens) as a visitor from the US until he gets his PR documents. I would need insurance that covers regular doctor's visits, immunizations and so on. I could only find travel insurance and it only covers emergency treatment. I am sure the school will require up-to-date immunizations, dental checks and so on. I can't believe there is no option anywhere in any insurance plan for this situation! Please help!

There are some insurance products that will cover select non-emergency medical care. (I'm traveling right now and have limited access to internet for the next few weeks but will try to find a link when I return.) However the fees for these products is high (with a high non-deductible amount) and in the end, you'll likely be better off paying for this medical care out of pocket. Keep in mind that insurance companies are in the business of making money - so the products they offer are structured to bring in more money than they cost. Again, I think you'll be far better off paying for non-emergency costs out of pocket and then obtaining insurance for emergency situations.

I agree with scylla. You do not need an insurance to cover your doctors visits because of a runny nose or a couple of stitches but you need something for emergencies to protect yourself from getting a huge big bill.

Unfortunately, the Visitors to Canada insurance would not cover any shots or regular check ups, but if your child does get sick, for example with a flu, then he will be covered. You can send us a private message and we will email you a link with a policy from one of the companies. That way you will know exactly what is covered and waht is excluded.
