Hello,

My mother is traveling to Canada on a visitor visa. Is it compulsory to book a return flight?

The reason I'm asking this is that the return date is not fixed, She will have to return within six months, but currently, I am not able to book the tickets in advance because the tentative return dates are 9 months far.

Yes, she need to make a return flight ticket since she is not coming on settlement or long visitation exceeding one year. Is she coming on a supervisa or why is her return dates 9 months far?

There are three choices:
1. Ask the flight ticket agency to choose the refundable ticket. Submit your booking then wait for the result. You may be charged an amount to cancel the ticket.
2. Write an explanation letter, tell them that you are not sure you can be granted Visitor visa or not so you just confirm the estimated date of arrival and departure from Canada. After getting visa you will book ticket.
3. Find some airlines allow to pay later by napas card (booking online). You won't have to provide your credit card information, they just need your email. Book your flight and get the booking through email. The booking will be canceled automatically within 12hrs without payment for no charge.

A very good chance she will be refused boarding at the airport without onward travel from Canada. Given CBSA decides how long she gets to stay at the POE, how do you know she is staying 9 months. Entry is only granted for a maximum 6 months. Your asking for trouble, IMO, if you present a 9 month return to CBSA.

She already has a Visitor visa. Hes visa permits her to stay in canada for max 6 months.

Visitor visa is only a means for boarding the flight to Canada and being presented before immigration officer and demand entry. The length of the duration is decided on entry. By default the stay for visitor is 180 days , if that is unless decided otherwise by the officer to give a shorter validity visa also if he or she decides to let the visitor enter Canada. Hence the pre deciding that it’s guaranteed entry for 6 months would not stand completely true. Though it’s a common practice to let visitor a stay for six months.

Even, buying a 9 months return flight ticket may raise serious issue for her. Some airport may not allow her board. Going by the fact that she's issued visitor visa which entitle her to a maximum of 6 months or less depending on BSO assessment at entry. Do you know that, if airport send message to the issuing visa office, they may cancel her visa. Because, when she applied for the visa, she didn't requested for 9 months visa, I am very sure of that. It's safer to book or buy open ticket or flexible/refundable for short days as stated in the TRV form. However, after admitted into Canada, if the need arise or reasonable, she can request to extend her stay and return ticket too can be changed accordingly. Thou, most airline will charge some fee for date change.

Speaking from personal experience on several occasions, most, if not all airlines will refuse bording without a return or onward ticket out of Canada. If for any reason a traveller is refused entry, it’s the airlines responsibility for transportation. No return ticket and they are on the hook for the cost of the flight.

Folks, the OP said that the mother will return within six months but that it's hard to buy tickets because that return date is nine months from now - I believe the OP's mother will only arrive in Canada three months from now. The OP is not planning the mother to stay for 9 months.

OP, it's a good idea to book a return flight. As @Buletruck says above, airlines will often refuse boarding to foreign nationals with a one-way ticket and no proof of return travel.

Yes. If you have got a work permit or a long validity Super visa or a Study permit you can buy and fly on a single side air ticket.
