Hi
I know I am quite late to share my experience in Canada. I booked Air india from amritsar to toronto via delhi. The flight from amritsar to delhi was just of 30-40 mins...so you hardly get any idea that what really happened. This was accompanied by very very very long 8 hours stay at the delhi airport. This part was really hard. You can't rest or sleep because you are always worried about ur hand baggae...at least i was. Then the flight took off at 2:15 am. The service of Air India sucks really !..Their food is hard to eat and you can't find any airhostess near you if need anything. So rather be ready to adjust if you are travelling with air india. The flight landed at toronto airport around 7 am ( canadian time) and the view of toronto lit up with lights was awesome. It was followed by immigration check. The people there aren't that polite ( at least in my case it was so). The first thing I did after that was buying a laptop because I landed on the boxing day so you can't really wait to freshen up urself else u lose a nice deal son ! I got my acer for 500 bucks. The stores try to lure you like they will provide you a hard copy of windows remove pre installed junkk from your laptop for a 130 $...dat is a waste you can do that all by urself. And for the people who were worried about that Canada is pretty strict about piracy ( even i was)..that was all very untrue. I asked my brother and uncle about that they have living here for 30 years, and they do use pirated stuff nobody does bother. I am using a pirated softwares, downloading torrents for the last 10-12 days and nothing happened. The piracy thing is serious for professionals nt for people like ( this is how I understand it ). After that I went to Tim hortons...you will definately find their hot beverages very bitter in taste, at least I did. After that I went to waterloo, the place the more like a village but people are so so friendly there u can't really imagine. They will suggest you, talk to you, laugh with you even if they don't have any relation with you ( the last two lines were for English people nt desi's
).Travelling without a car from one city to another is a hard thing here. The weather is isn't that bad actually ....I remember I read one post over the forum mentioning ' If you take ur bare body part out it will eventually freeze there. I feel the cold back in India at least in Punjab is bad it actually surround and engulfs you but the cold here just attacks and goes away it doesn't stick. Still you need to be in proper gear when you are out. The things like freeze rain is pretty slippery so you need to be careful abt it.
Then after spending a few days there I started looking for a accomodation, this part was hard when you have so many of students here looking for the cheap and nearest to the college place. I tried 15-20 places and finally found a place to live. If you are thinking of taking up a basement then you will to have all things like utensils daily use items back there from India. If you are thinking of taking up a room and share kitchen/washroom with the landlord, then no need to bring those things you will eventually share those with the landlord. But some people hear are very hard on the fact of keeping cleanliness. The approx rent for a basement here is 600-1000 dollars and you can it with 1-2-3-6 frnds depending on landlord. If you are thinking of taking up a room then 300-600 $ , but then usually you can't share that with any other frnd.
Things here are expensive especially if you convert the price into rupess and compare it with price back their in India. Things I found the cheapest till date was my laptop, maggie (3 for 1 $), cokes , milk and eggs. Rest if you are at right place at the right time ( i mean at sales ), then its gud.
And one last thing don't go on people saying like Canada is very cold, brampton is full of desi's, food in canada is very cheap, humber/sheridan or any other is full of desi's etc etc etc. Every place has its own varient population and there is a balance in it. So don't think of extremes when you hear people's sayings, rather think of Canada as anyother place with balance of everything..!
