Hi Alicia,

Have you received his birth certificate yet? And if so, how long did it take to get it?

Thanks.
Yes, I have received both the long form and short form birth certificates in the mail, it was very fast, just around a week. You apply online and they mail it to you.

Congrats. That's not too bad of a price although it would cost more if they kept you for few extra nights.
Thank you!
The standard for natural birth is a one night stay, if I had a Caserean it would have been 2 nights.
The hospital fee was $2000/day.

Are you in the 3 month waiting period? Then maybe they will! I'm not in the waiting period yet because I am only on implied status and have never had OHIP.
I gave birth at Brampton Civic (William Osler) in Ontario too.

Hospitals can charge whatever they want to charge you without OHIP coverage. If they want to charge you half of the cost, that's their business. But to say they will half the cost because you are in 1.5 months into 3 months wait for ohip is, in my opinion, BS. There have never been a policy of linking or prorating hospital / doctor charges to OHIP waiting period at all.

Either you have OHIP coverage or you don't. That is like you being half pregnant.

make sure you get it in writing. And determine half of what. Probably half of their "out-of-pocket" fee and not their OHIP fee.

Must be expensive giving birth in Canada without yet being a PR. I ask that because my wife is set to give birth in few months but we obted to give birth in the US as it is very expensive here in Canada.
Whoa, Canada sounds cheap to have a baby in the hospital.

In the US, NJ specifically, birthing my son with an epidural, 6 hr labor and 2 night stay cost well over 60K. The negotiated rate with Aetna brought the bill down to a little over 15K, my out of pocket expenses were $400, my annual deductible. So I would have to say the US costs MUCH more to give birth in, than giving birth in Canada. Unless your giving birth and then not paying your hospital bills, which happens all the time here. Then yes, the US is much more affordable.

I have friends who had their $2000 fee halved to $1000 by one of the financial managers at the hospital they gave birth in. Sunnybrook in Toronto. It is very much up to the discretion of whoever is handling your bill.
Good luck!

It looks like I might have to land a few days after I give birth. They're proposing giving me a deadline of July 23rd (I'm due July 11th but could go late). So the baby won't have any papers then. How far before the border do I have to leave my husband and the baby behind? Can I leave them right before the US border booth and pick them up after I do the U turn? Or do I have to leave them far behind?

We live close to Toronto, so will be landing at one of the following: Peace Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston, or Niagara falls. Does anyone know which would be quickest? I would rather not leave the baby behind too long. I heard that at Niagara falls you can just walk across the bridge to the US side and come back, would that make the time I'm separated from the baby shorter? There's also the chance that I might have unhealed stitches, so I don't even know if it will be possible for me to sit in the driver's seat for too long after I drop off my husband.
