If you are in good health and in possession of a medical report to support, then you are eligible to apply for a work permit as you enter Canada (at the POE).

Canada allows the change of status from visitor to worker. If they ask why, I would just be honest and tell them it was easier to get the medical done in Canada.
Thank-you Wilson and Amikety for your tremendously helpful insight and information. The idea that they could be denied the WP just because the medical report was not performed in the country of origin did seem a little far-fetched and rather silly to me. If they prove they´re healthy, that´s all that matters, right. Your comments provided great reassurance and make good sense.

My brother is a general practitioner in Mississauga. I´m going to ring him up to see how much a medical examination would cost non-citizens or non-permanent citizens. It would probably be better to get a medical insurance plan done up before flying to Canada, because they might not have coverage as visitors.

However, this method of getting to Canada and on the job faster (I mean, way faster), does not come without a cost - in terms of money and convenience. Flying in as tourists means they must purchase round trip tickets and driving all the way down from Edmonton to the nearest border is certainly no short trip. But, at least there in an they have a job.

Geez ... this is a fabulous Forum ... can be quite addictive, though. 8)

It cost me $180 for the medical exam, $45 for the x-ray, and $39 for the bloodwork. I live in Calgary. Benefits will not cover this service. I'm applying Outland for spousal sponsorship and I did my medicals in Canada too.

The doctor must be a DMP - designated medical practitioner. You can find one near you here:

That comes out to a total cost of 264$ CDN if my math is not wrong (no, I didn´t use a calculator ;)) . Cheaper than getting it done in Portugal - 237.50€ = 313$ CDN (almost).

Amikety, the link you provide takes us to a list of doctors for examination outside Canada. When you mention DMP, ar you referring to doctors located within Canada, outside Canada or both?

Also, is there anywhere I can download the medical examination forms which provide information on how the exams must be performed?

Thanx, once again for sharing your knowledge.

The doctor will have all forms.

That link does include Canadian doctors. Select "North America" then "Canada." I tried to post a direct link, but it goes back to the main page bah!

Doctors inside Canada will do exams for 'inside' and 'outside' applicants. Some classes, such as spouse, use both while inside Canada. Mine did both - just had to tell her which office to mail the forms to. If you're unsure, call the office and ask.

Btw, if you want the forms just to read them over, you can search and find them. That's what I did........ but they've changed the medicals since I had mine. It was Appendix C, D, and E. Appendix C isn't even include in my country instructions now. :/

Don't forget to take the pictures. That will cost a little more too :(

Edit: I had the old forms bookmarked on my browser. Just went to see them and the link is removed! Boo!

Pictures? Eerr, what pictures??

Wow! That was really great information on the medicals that released me from a state of angst. All of a sudden, things have become much clearer! Thanx a million Sir Amikety!

It never occurred to me (and probably would never have) that Canadian doctors could also be CIC panel physicians. Obviously it should have, but I assumed that medical examinations were only useful for those seeking to enter Canada, not those who had already made it past the gate. (I guess that´s why my elementary school teacher in Kitchener once said that when one assumes - one makes and "ass" out of "u" and "me").

Well, Portuguese-speaking Dr. Jordanka Angelova of Edmonton, expect to receive a handful of Portuguese clients for medical examination in 6-10 weeks time ;D

The employer from Edmonton, Alberta wants the welders at work 3 days after arriving in Edmonton. He needs them badly. Amikety, what do u think? Do u think the medical exams can be performed, processed and the results handed to the clients in 3 days? If not, how long may it take if the physician really believes it´s urgent and gives it priority?

In Portugal, the person seeking a WP receives the medical forms and then chooses one of the panel doctors available to undertake the examination. However, the results ARE NOT handed to him but sent directly to the Embassy in Paris.

In Canada, who does the physician hand over the results to? The answer may seem obvious, but one never knows... ::)

Well, I´m off to bed! Almost 2 am and at 7:30 am I´m up and running to make it on time to work.

Yes, we must cherish each day we live ... it´s a blessing often taken for granted

Just so you know, I'm actually female, but I get called sir so much, I just went with it....

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but here is what I do know - The x-ray and bloodwork take a little bit of time to come back to the DMP. First, a specialist has to review the x-ray/bloodwork and do a write up. Then they usually mail it to the doctor and the doctor does the final report. I believe CIC is switching to an e system for medicals, so then the doctor could directly upload the information to a database. Which makes me wonder if they still use the pictures.... Maybe they scan them? The pictures are for verification the person getting the medicals is the same person applying for the visa (to make sure someone with active TB doesn't come to Canada without getting treatment first, etc).

I don't know how long it takes, but my doctor told me about a week and she would mail it off. They did give me a green and white form to include in my application.

I would make sure to call the doctor and schedule an appointment. My DMP was appointment only and had a waiting period of about 10 days. Each person will need a separate appointment.

Now.... because they're TFW, I could be completely backwards wrong (even about pictures). You may want to start a new thread to ask about the speed of the medicals. Most people won't poke into a thread this far gone and dig up your question. We tend to let 1-2 people help one person and run with it ;) However, repost that exact question and someone with direct experience or knowledge will hopefully answer.

Just one question - where are you seeing this gentlemen need medicals? I know certain workers, such as nannies, need them, but I didn't know welders did.
