It's very true that alot of people will get help with their resume as it can be difficult to be objective about yourself. All of us have a number of skills and key competencies that we often take for granted and either don't know 'how' to put on paper, or don't even recognize them as skills employers want to read about.

Sometimes all you need is a friend to help proof-read your resume and ask clarifying questions and other times you'll invest in getting professional resume help. Please remember that your resume needs to 'sound' and 'feel' like you. Some professional resume writers can work wonders at pulling information from you and helping you translate your skills and qualifications to paper, others can produce a fancy resume, it's well crafted, says all the right things - but can you then 'sell it' when you meet with someone?

Always ensure the phrases, wording and terminology is how YOU would talk. As an interviewer I can tell you that what is extremely frustrating is reading a resume then speaking on the phone, or meeting someone for an interviewer and you know they didn't write (or heavily contribute to writing) their own resume -- the paper and the person don't match. Your paper brand (resume) will give the reader all sorts of clues as to your style, communication ability and how you promote yourself.

Whenever you hire any professional make sure you review their credentials. Is this truly their full-time area of expertise? Do they have references? If it makes sense to hire them, then do it, but please make sure (with their assistance) the resume feels and sounds like YOU.

I could not agree with you more regarding credentials and references. But I will take it one step further: Make sure that whoever you hire makes outstanding service their highest virtue. A good consultant will take the time to get to know the client personally and bring out client's own voice.

We are not all writers, but we are all unique. A good resume consultant will inspire the client to let that uniqueness shine through and will then will be able translate it into the written word. And with service as the highest virture, the consultant will work with each client until the job is done right.
