Hi everyone! I'm a Filipino in her 30s, unmarried, and no kids. I still have my living parents and a brother who live with me. I have a *first cousin* who is a Canadian Citizen and I am thinking of asking him to sponsor me under Family Class Sponsorship - Other Relative. He has his own family in Canada such as his wife and his son.

In this link, under "Other Relative"- https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/other-relatives/who-you-can-sponsor.html, it says that he can sponsor one relative of any age if he meets ALL of these conditions:
  • He doesn't have a living relative who he could sponsor instead AND who is a Canadian citizen/Permanent resident.
One of the living relatives in the list is spouse, as well as son/daughter, which are both Canadian citizens related with my cousin. Do I understand it correctly that he cannot sponsor me then? Or is there any exemption to the rule that I may not know? Thank you for your response.

He does not qualify to sponsor you since he already has a family in Canada. There are no exemptions. You will have to qualify on your own through an economic immigration stream like Express Entry.

Thank you for confirming it, scylla. I just really needed to make sure I understood it correctly.

Even if your cousin did qualify to sponsor under "alone in Canada" clause. You would still not be qualified as you are not his "immediate" family member as cousins don't qualify to be sponsored anyway,

There is no requirement for the sponsored person to be an immediate relative. A cousin could certainly be sponsored if the sponsor met all of the requirements.

I agree with you, canuck_in_uk. That is also my understanding. Unfortunately, it looks like my cousin is not eligible to sponsor since he does have a family he lives with in Canada, as well as parents and siblings living in the US (whom he could potentially sponsor instead of me).

I created an Express Entry profile but my profile resulted to be ineligible even when the result of my eligibility test said I was eligible to apply for Express Entry. Does that mean I did not reach the minimum points for an Express Entry profile? I tried using the online CRS calculator and got only 343 total points.

You probably answered a question incorrectly. Agreed you should post your questions to the Express Entry section of the forum. Note that you need to have around 460 points to be selected through EE.

You are correct. I didn't realized that they changed the family relative qualification under "alone in Canada" clause. I would imagined that only 1st cousins would qualify as potential applicant for sponsorship.

It hasn't been changed.
