I flagpoled at the rainbow bridge yesterday and they took my photo and my fingerprints. It took about an hour. :(

Why did they do this? Does this mean I have a bad US record?

Is this common? And does it affect my future US visa applications?

Thanks

strange. i did flagpole at rainbow bridge last week. I just wait about 5mins only without photo taken or fingerprint.
Did you tell them that, you come for landing in Canada? and need the refuse paper?

Yeah I told them that. At the end they gave me a letter titled as "notice of refusal of admission/parole into the united state". Is this the same letter you got?

guys.. this is called administrative refusal - means nothing negative in US CBP records

flag pole is part of this process

Once i fill in administrative refusal form during landing and If i am plan to apply for US visa in future, there is a option asking have you been refused to enter in USA in past. So, should i say yes or no in such case?

Found few Info in Forum regard this
1) http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/did-you-flag-pole-around-border-to-get-work-permit-please-respond-with-result-t105168.0.html
2) http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/anyone-experience-flagpole-at-us-border-near-vancouver-t171337.0.html

u mark it as no - and in comments - u write up flagpoled seeking administrative refusal

It's Administrative Refusal. There's a reason they have this and the only place it's recorded is on that piece of paper in your hand. Has ZERO impact on future attempts to enter the US.

The fingerprint thing happens for citizens of certain countries without exception. It is usually a reciprocal thing, i.e. one way to find out is to ask your country's border services whether they take fingerprints of American citizens at the border. This is also no cause for concern, just a procedure and the border agent is probably as bothered with the extra work as you are.

They run the fingerprint against their database to make sure yours is not in there and once that is verified you get the Admin Refusal like everyone else doing a flagpole.

Guys, thanks a lot for your replies. It's certainly very reassuring. I'm a citizen of one of those "certain" countries.

However, there is something that really concerns me. Here, someone says they handwrite "flag-pole" as the third option in the "refusal" form: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/landing-procedure-t34798.0.html;msg222174#msg222174

But in my case they explicitly marked the first option: "Refused admission into the United States".

That thread is from 2010. Is it common to mark the first option nowadays? or do they still have the practice of the hand-written "flag-pole"?

Thanks!

There's no official "flagpole" letter. You are okay, don't worry about a random comment about a random handwriting on an effectively useless piece of paper from 4 years ago.

I had applied for US B1/B2 visa saying yes to this option and then explained that I did flagpole as part of landing procedure to become Canada Permanent Resident on so and so date and I am applying US Visa for the first time. Cause technically speaking it is a refusal and being honest is good with clear explanation.

After that I was interviewed and approved US Visa with no issues at all. Hope that helps!

Cheers!
