Hi guys,

I am newbie in this forum. I have read some post here and most of you guys are really helpful to newbies. I would like to know guys if anybody have successfully applied to a canadian employer while on a visitor visa (purpose is to get get a job offer and the employer can sponsor the person for a work permit). And is it a better way of applying for a job rather than applying on line?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, even I would like to ahve a answer on this , as even I am thinking of applying for a visitor visa, and then try to find an employer who is ready to apply for LMO, after me coming to Canada and attending interviews.

I've been in Calgary 1.5 years looking for a LMO job. I am qualified for many jobs, over qualified in most cases. I've even tried my former job in the USA location in Calgary.

0 job offers
0 interviews
0 phone calls

LMO jobs hard to get unless you know someone or you are a skilled worker in need in that province. The manager at Subway has told me they get 1000 or more applications for one job from people in Canada and outside. Usually, however, they only advert the job to follow regulations and already have an employee picked out.

Last year while working in NY I was laid off and because of 6 years term I was suppose to leave US. I posted a my brief summary of my experience and skills set on linked in job board and it worked. I was hired by a Inv bank in NY first and then moved to Montreal on Work Permit 3 months later. It did involve LMO/CAQ. Recently got 3 years extension and that also required LMO.

Sad to hear that Amikety. What are your skills in which you were looking out for. Some of them like rgirish are lucky to have LMO Sponsors.
Hope luck turns out well for us as well

So lets get the Math straight... you claim to be 39 years old and you have 24 years experience as a structure fabricator? This fact seems a little............... ummm shall we say........... "fabricated"

Anyways your 24 years of experience as a structure fabricator in Pakistan does not count because its not work experience in Canada. Therefore you have to start with odd jobs, like pizza delivery, mcdonalds attendant, gas station attendant, dishwasher etc. This will earn you valuable Canadian work experience and then you can move up

I need your oppinion:
My husband is a industrial electrician with 20 years of experience (in Serbia, not Canada, unfortunatelly). The idea is that he would go to Canada on a tourist visa and complete a trades certificate (after two month exam preparations on the local college), it will take about three months, all together. What are the chances for him ti find a job (that is the employer willing to give him a LMO) while he is still there? And if he does, must he come back home and how can we join him?
I saw amikety's post and it had confused me a bit because I was under impression that it is not that difficult to get a skilled job there.
We were checking a lot of job adds and they all demand this certificate, so this is the only way to obtain it.
Does anyone know what is the market demand for this occupation?

It depends on where you go. If there's a need to hire a foreign worker, some employers will do it. He may be able to find work in the oilfields or far north if he's willing to put up with the cold.

Many employers refuse to consider any foreign worker because of the costs involved.

I live in a city with hundreds of foreign workers plus "visitors" that are looking for work to stay. No one in their right mind would hire an electrical here on a LMO. There are plenty of Canadians licensed already. It would be difficult to even get a LMO in the city for an electrician because there are plenty here.

Unless the employer already has a LMO, they take 3-6 months to get. Also as a visitor, your husband cannot apply inside Canada for a work permit. He can go to the USA border or apply to his home VO. If he takes 3 months to get his license (only one month to get hired is very short, average is 3-6 months) then 4 months for the LMO, obviously his visit will be over. He could apply for an extension and use implied status to stay. However a work permit will NOT grant him implied status in that situation.

He should research the jobs available, contact the companies directly, and see IF they hire foreigners. I know Canada advertises they hire so many TFW - but a large portion are nannies. Another large group work fast food. Those are the only two jobs that regularly hire foreigners around here.

Check out Canada Job Bank for jobs.

Thanks, Amikety, for your honest opinion.
It seems that the best way for us is that he shoul obtain a licence and come home immediately. Then he can apply for FSTC and we can all go to Canada together and start looking for jobs while there legally.
Can someone tell me what is the labour market for industrial electricians (licenced), is it hard to get a job and are the wages high enough to live a normal life, even if only one spouse works (just for the beginning)? And what level of English knowledge is demanded for trades (not in the application, but for real work)?
