Hi all,

My wife and I are doing the final touches to our application and have a question about certified copies. We know we need copies of several documents like marriage certificates, ID, etc. Do these need to be certified by an authorized person if all our stuff is in English?

Also saving this thread for a possible few upcoming questions we'll have.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

JC

As I understand it copies of english documents are fine, but your country specific instructions will tell you exactly what's needed. That said, I sent photocopies of my wedding certificate, passport, and birth certificate and had no problems. My wife, Russian, had to have her birth certificate, national ID card, etc.. translated and notarized.

Hope that helps.

What visa office will you be applying through?

The instructions for the country specific Visa office will show you all the requirements that the particular VO needs.
Some VO's ask for Original documents, some ask for notarized copies, and still others ordinary photo copies are accepted it depends on the type of document and the VO office requirements.

We are sponsoring her to come to Canada from the United States. So the visa office I believe is CPC-Ottawa.

I'm with them on this. If it's in English already, there's no need to do anything else since all of those documents are government issued and considered official. Unless you got married elsewhere or were born somewhere else.

No, nothing needs to be certified for US apps. Just regular photocopies are fine.

Thanks for clearing that up guys.

Another question.
At the end of IMM5540 it asks to include any information that can prove your genuine relationship. For this, we both wrote personal essays describing the development of our relationship. Should we attach this to the form or have it in our supporting documents folder and just have them refer to that?

Thanks again!

Speaking of Visa Offices, if I'm an American citizen applying to be sponsored to Canada, will I request CPC-O for my "Immigration Office requested for processing this application" (IMM0008)? Or do I need to find an American office after Mississauga?

you don't find an office after mississauga. both the applicant and sponsor applications get sent TOGETHER in the same package to mississauga, then CIC will internally transfer it to the appropriate visa office. ALL US applications get sent to Ottawa first, and if there is an issue (common ones are: non-accompanying depedant, criminal, relationship, or applicant is not US citizen), then ottawa will transfer it to LA. LA is the ONLY office handling spousal sponsorships in the US, so if an interview is required, it will be in LA. 99% of applicants get the application waived. So the short answer is yes, your visa office of choice is Ottawa. No matter what you write, it will still get sent to Ottawa.

Another question here,

For form IMM5406 Additional Family Information Section A, are we to include spouse information if the spouse is the sponsor? And are mother and father informations required if they are not accompanying the spouse?

Thanks again,

yes, the entire form needs to be filled out. this form has nothing to do with who is being currently sponsored, it is basically information for FUTURE sponsorship ability once the applicant is approved for PR. If the applicant does not fill it out fully, it will either be returned, cause more trouble for the application, or prevent future family sponsorship. The spouse (even if it's the sponsor), dependants, siblings and parents must be listed, even if they are deceased.

You should provide proof that you will be returning to Canada once your wife's PR status is approved. This proof can include things like property owned in Canada, proof of a job offer in Canada, proof you are searching for / interviewing for jobs in Canada, etc.

Hi, so for this application the directions state: "The principal applicant, their spouse, and all dependent children must complete their own copy of this form." Does this mean that my spouse (who is to be my sponsor) must also fill out his own copy? Also the present address/email section is a little confusing since I don't currently live with my spouse. Do I fill out our individual addresses and put both of our emails? Or just his since it's under his section?
Thanks
