Good Evening Forum,

I was wondering if someone could put some imput on this topic. This year is my first year filing my income taxes as a married couple in Canada. My husband is back home in jamaica. Would I get less money back when I file my taxes? What could you claim on your taxes when a wife is sponsoring her husband?

Thank you

On the federal tax you would claim your spouse as dependent, and transfer their tax credit to you and yes you may end up paying lower taxes. However on the provincial level its different, the Quebec gov't didn't allow me to claim my wife cause she wasn't in Canada yet, nor did she have a SIN card since we were still waiting on our application.

My husband doesn't have any tax credit as he is not working he just returned home in nov and started school in jan this year. Do I still file as a dependent for him?

I think I will see a professional to file my taxes

I personally, would tell anyone who goes through immigration to go to a professional accountant. It's very annoying and very time consuming!!!!

Just file online or even buy a program... It's easy and cheep.

Don't waste your time or money with a professional. I've been doing it for 15 years and before Internet filing you could use telephone filing.

All information required for dependants and/or spouse will be there.

Taxes are a breeeeeeeze compared to pr applications!

you can claim your husband as a dependent but a) you must provide his worldwide income - caribbean islands are usually pretty low - and you must be able to prove that you supported your husband/spouse....you do not have to send it in at the time of filing but you must prove that you sent money to your husband/spouse on a regular basis that was used for rent/food/clothing......so if you sent yoru spouse/husband say $100 a month you definitely qualify..

My husband and I got married July 2012. He is landing as PR here in Canada on March 2nd,2013, which will be before taxes are due. So by this time he will have a SIN. Since we'll have been married for the 2nd half of 2012, and in 2012 he wasn't landed as a permanent resident, will this still create issues? My dad does my taxes and just wondering if there are some issues he might encounter with our situation.

Not really. Just include his SIN and his world income from the past year.

Great, thank you.

I will be claiming my husband as a dependent this year also.

Thanks for the answer. Fir some reason I was thinking it referred to a minimum or average income level that was actually published somewhere!

He is a full-time student and has been since 2010. I have asked him to get a letter from the university attesting to this. I have keep records of all money transfers from me to him. Same ones I submitted as part of our application. And others since then.
