Hello, guys..
I know it's almost time to file 2015 taxes but my spouse just got a letter from Canada Revenue saying I am not eligible for the tax refund (HST/GST).
We live in Ontario.
I was living with him from august 2014 to Abril 2015 before I became a PR. At that time, I was on a visitor visa.
I saw people saying they got "big" checks because they added their spouses in the forms.
Can anyone give me a light here?
We were supposed to get over 3 thousand dollars and we only got 408 dollars.
HELP please..
PS: We can file an objection.

THanks

Actually its still like 4-6 months away for most folks to be thinking about the 2015 tax returns. Taxes are sometimes convoluted so might be best to call CRA and get clarification from them or from the person who prepared your tax return.

Can you confirm what was his marital status as at December 31, 2014?
Spouse: This applies to a person to whom you are legally married.

Common-law partner: This applies to a person who is not your spouse, with whom you are living in a conjugal relationship, and to whom at least one of the following situations applies. He or she:
has been living with you in a conjugal relationship, and this current relationship has lasted at least 12 continuous months;
Note
In this definition, 12 continuous months includes any period you were separated for less than 90 days because of a breakdown in the relationship.
is the parent of your child by birth or adoption; or
has custody and control of your child (or had custody and control immediately before the child turned 19 years of age) and your child is wholly dependent on that person for support.

OR SIngle

Keeping in mind in order to claim spousal deduction he would prove that he support you (financial etc)

"In order for an individual to claim the spousal tax credit for a non-resident spouse, or the dependant tax credit for a non-resident child or grandchild of the individual or the individual's spouse, it is necessary that such non-resident person be supported by or be dependent for support on the individual. The question of support or dependency is determined on the facts of each case. If the non-resident spouse, child or grandchild have enough income or assistance for a reasonable standard of living in the country in which they live, they are not considered to be supported by or be dependent for support on the individual. Also, gifts which merely enhance or supplement the already adequate lifestyle of the non-resident person do not constitute support."

I got a similar message, my question is how do we show how much our spouses made now? I see online CRA I can edit my own return but it's incredibly confusing. They won't release my GST cheque till I prove how much he didn't make, lol.

First, tax refunds are based on individual circumstances so not everyone gets a refund... some people owe. I do my taxes by myself and it is unusual to have such a significant discrepancy in refund ($3000 vs $408) if information is entered properly.

From the information you shared, I suspect it has to do with your marital status and whether or not you were deemed a resident for tax purposes (different from being a permanent resident) as of Dec 31, 2014.

What was your spouse's marital status as of Dec 31, 2014? If you were not married and had not lived together for 12 straight months by Dec 31, then you were not considered common-law partners yet. So any credits that come with a change in marital status, don't apply.

Are you a resident for tax purposes? That is, lived in Canada for at least 183 days in 2014?
