Hello,

I have a personal interview for my permanent residence in Detroit in April 2010. I applied as a skilled worker in November 2008. My file was transferred from Buffalo to Detroit in October 2009. I am an int'l student and working in Toronto.

I received a letter from Detroit in mid February stating that I have to attend an interview. Thanks God, I already visited USA and have a valid visa.

Does anyone know what exactly they are going to ask me? Are they going to ask for more documentation for assessment? What's the purpose of the interview?

Please post some thoughts so that I can be ready for the interview. Much appreciated.

Hope you pass the interview. What does that mean? If you are a scheduled an interview in a country which you can't get a visa to for example, does this mean you can't continue the process of Canada immigration? What if you don't have a valid visa to USA and your interview will be there and they refuse to give you a visa for any reason what do you do then?

I have no idea what would happen if I did not have a US visa. I received an interview request in mid February and the interview is scheduled in mid April. It takes about two months just to get an appointment for a US visa in Toronto. Then another month minimum to receive the visa after clearance.

I don't know how the Detroit office did the math and wants me to see them in two months. I am just wondering what they will ask me.

Hi
Form my experinece I would suggest that it's always a good and safe idea to apply to your home country visa office..The worst will be when have an interview to attend in a foreig country and you can't travel due to visa restrictions..

Not sure if anyone has experienced getting a US visitor visa to attend immigration interview in Buffalo..

Order the CAIPS notes as soon as possible and you will know exactly why they are asking you to attend an interview, and what will be exactly verified at the interview.

That is not a reason to get your application refused. There are many scenarios related to that situation depending on the immigration officer who is dealing with your application. I have gone through many cases who were refused USA visa to attend the interview, some of them have got their interview waived with asking for extra documents, others were got their applications transfered to their countries of nationality, and others have been interviewed via phone.

The entire decision depends on the immigration officer. However, they will never refuse your application just because you could not attend the interview because your visa was denied as long as you informed them as soon as possible that your visa was refused supporting your claim with the appropriate documentation " the visa denial document".

Therefore, do not worry about this point.

I received my US Visa last year and it was after my application was sent to Buffalo. And my US visa was issued for 5 years and does not relate to my PR application.

CAIPS notes stands for "Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System" which contains all of your application information in the visa office, processing, points....and so on, in addition to any notes written by the immigration officer who is dealing with your application and the reasons of asking you for an interview.

That is how you order it :

If you are living in Canada you can order your own CAIPS notes for free under the Privacy Act.

1) Go the site

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5563B.pdf

fill in the firm with the required details i.e.:

a) Visa post (e.g. Buffalo, NY etc.)
b) File number (e.g. BXXXX..)
c) Date of Birth
d) Your Postal address (In Canada address only)

2) Check on the box for the CAIPS notes request in the form.

3)Provide a photocopy of your valid permit/visa in Canada (Person requesting).

Post all the papers together to :

Thanks Professional1 for the useful information. Do I really need to get my application information from CIC? My interview is scheduled two weeks from now. It might have been helpful If I came to this forum earlier.

Do you know anyone who had interviews in Detroit? What do they ask? Will they ask for more documents for assessment? Do you know anyone who has been refused by Detroit or NY offices after the Buffalo office transferred the file?

The letter I received from the Detroit office asks to bring the documents as per the "document list". But I did not receive the list, so I emailed yesterday regarding the list whether to bring documents. They replied that they would send a "document list" separately. If they send now, I don't know how they think I will be able to get the list and arrange the documents before the interview on April 14.

Unfortunatly as you said the CAIPS notes idea is not going to work in your case because your interview is scheduled 2 weeks from now and the notes might take upto one month to be sent to you.

Regarding the document checklist which they are going to send you, it might be documents that do not require long time to get them such as "notes assessment from canada revenue agency", updated proof of employment from your current employer...and so on.

Anyway, if they ask for any documents which require more time than they have given you, do not worry, just take whatever you are able to get with you to the interview and tell them that the other documents need more time to be available and that you are going to submit as soon as you get it.

Regarding your last inquiry, having an interview in any visa office does not mean at all that your refusal chances are higher or lower than others who do not have it. in the contrary, when you have an interview face to face with the immigration officer who has doubts concerning your application, it is better to have a direct conversation with him to explain and remove the doubts.

The questions which they are going to ask in the interview will be related to the weakness points in your application (if there is any). Therefore, try to remember which documents exactly in your application might have given them insufficient or unclear information to make their decision, and be prepared to answer any inquiry about it.

Finaly, the whole matter of selecting you for an interview might be a random selection not targeted, just for quality assurance purposes of the immigration process. In such a case, there is nothing special to be asked about except a regular check and review of your application in your presens to make sure that everything is fine.

Good luck.

Thanks Professional 1. Your reply gave me more confidence, to be honest. Just for curiosity, are you a candidate, immigrant/citizen or professional immigration consultant?
