when you say student visa do you mean study permit, or visitor visa - for study?

Student visa and study permit are the same thing.

I learned the hard way they are not, a study permit allows you to stay in Canada for your studies, a student visa/visitor visa - for study allows you to enter Canada.

although if you apply for your first study permit it will come with the visa
