family class in canada finally completed. I have all documents they need, my sponsor my husband of 18 years , a canadian citizen..my 3 daughters US passports as well as mine all up to date, but they are asking for my social insurance card? Isn't that what I get when I get my Perm res card? I have no social insurance card..how would i get one? And wasn't expecting the 490.00 fee to get the appt either.. Whew! what a process..!anyone have any answers regarding SIN#? why would they ask for that? Am i missing something..it says required document!

Who is asking for it? Have you landed yet? If you have landed, go to Service Canada, they will give you a number that will be on your card and then you can give it to them. Just so you know, only employers, disability offices, tax centres and banks can ask for your SIN.

Who are "they"? What stage of the process are you at? There is nothing in the PR process where anyone should be requesting your SIN.

Immigration. I have an appt in kitchener with my approved sponsor (my canadian citizen husband of 18 years) and my children. I have to bring proof of 490.00 which i paid thru canadian immigration site, original passports and my SIN number? Also 2 pictures each of us for perm resident documents. I have done everything but don't have SIN number as its my understanding i am waiting for permanent residency to get one of those so I can work.. my approval for open work permit came just recently.. Ill be perm resident before then..
as for landed status. We came here dec 2010 and stayed. we applied in family but I didn't realize i needed to extend my visa and just didn't. I haven't worked which has been a huge strain. have no medical, receive no benefits of course.my husband is canadian citizen. he has a doctor. me and his 3 kids in limbo.i called immigration when i realized about the visa,,and got someone rude saying i could be deported but it was too late good luck. I went to the MP and with a few calls said that was not the case to wait for this letter which is for perm resident documents. But still.. it is highlighted that I NEED to bring my SIN number…

If your approval for an open work permit has been received then you can take that to Service Canada, get an SIN and start working? I do not understand when you say you will have PR before your open work permit. The open work permit is given on approval in principle which is usually several months before PR is granted.

If CIC has issued you an open work permit, they would assume you went and got a SIN so maybe that's why they are asking for it. Although I'm not sure why they would need it.

They didn't Issue an open work permit…just said I could now apply for it.. I didn't APPLY for the permit even though they said I could now do that..because i knew pr was so close and it was more money and would take longer than pr. When the letter said i could now apply for an open work permit , i went to service canada who then said they couldn't help me and had me call immigration. Immigration then said wait for pr meeting/interview or apply for permit and get a refund if it comes after perm res status. 2 weeks later I received the letter, request for 490.00 and a list of highlighted things to bring, one being sin number.. I have everything else. I guess we should be ok..obviously i didn't understand this process. It has been so very hard. I just hope our meeting goes well and all this can be behind us.I just want to work and support my family.

Hey there fellow K-W immigrate! :p
When you file Inland you have the option to file for the Open work permit, since you did not file for the work permit you were never issued a temporary social insurance number, when you go to the landing interview just tell them you didn't apply for a OWP and you don't have a TSIN. the reason they ask for this is because once the landing interview is over they take the TSIN card and issue you your permanent SIN which is mailed to you in about a week, you will have a paper with the number you can use. Good Luck!

30-11-2012!
I think they used a standard letter. In many cases I would assume people would apply for an OWP, which allows you to work before becoming a PR and also eliminate the needs to have your status updated.
