Fighting Bill-C24 by petition Q&A : are we winning yet?

Friends and Supporters,
As we reached over 6000 signatures on the petition (link below), I wanted to give you an interim report on how we are doing so far on our activities:
1. We have contacted over 50 MP's and sent them our message and documents through email, fax and regular mail.
2. We have conducted 15 meetings with conservative, NDP and liberal MPs across Canada. We have met a great support among those MPs who were ready to meet with us and several had agreed to table our petition (the legal version of it) at the parliament. Few more meetings have been scheduled and will be conducted soon.
3. We are working with immigration committee members and were invited as a group to be witnesses/experts in front of the committee when the Bill is going to be debated. This is very important achievement as committee is the one responsible for any future Bill amendments. Due to all of the above,
4. We had several press releases, in Toronto Star, Kingston Tv and Vancouver press. We are working on getting more.

Yes! And I think it is,already helping a lot!
As I mentioned, we are now a 'side' in immigration committee discussions. As well the implementation (legislation) of the bill has been delayed indefinitely - right now there is no firm schedule for second reading. Any delay is good for us.

It would be nice if everyone could also share the story in their language communities. So far we had coverage in a Russian and Korean local media (what I know of). It would be great to have more publications of this kind.

First of all, thanks for your efforts. We (at least me) all current and future applicants really appreciate.

Need some clarification on the following:

What is your source? is it your assessment or from interaction with MPs (specially conservative and may be the one in immigration committee)?

do you mean the second reading has not been scheduled or is not on radar?

I met the PM of my constituent and she was very supportive and nice to me. She is NDP and she wrote a letter and handeled it by herself to the minister. She is really a wonderful woman . I received a reply from the minister which doen not reply on any issues which were mentionnd in her letter,only plain phrases and general sentences. I think we have to meet all PMs all over Canada. So encourage whoever you know in all constituents to contact their corresponant PMs and encourage them to write to the minister and prime minister too. Also multipications of petitions will help. The mentionned petition is citing only one aspect of the Bill C24. Bill C24 is full of inapopriaite issues including the power given to the minister to revoke or withdraw the citizenship without giving the rights to defend your right and chanllenge his decision in front of a court which is a basic of human rights. I do not think it is already stuck at any pont but it is March break that is all. They will resume the second reading soon.

The problem with the bill C 24 is that, there are some points which are good like fastening the processing of application, but all over is bad, so conservative are doing this: putting poison in honey, I am not very optimistic, conservative has majority in parliament and eventually will pass the law, other parties generally supporting the bill because it became a matter of patriotism

Other parties are not supporting the bill in its current shape (more information here - http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-2/C-24/ ). Nonetheless, Conservatives can pass it, since we have a majority Government. Even though this would be unfortunate, it still doesn't exhaust our options.

For now, the most important thing is that we are getting a lot of support from general public. Also, surprisingly enough, we are getting support from some Conservative MPs. Generally speaking, the more signatures our petition gets at this point -> the better.

No actual technical reasons for this lengthy time,many people think that this was done by intention. If you notice that the residency questionnaire whic they created takes long times in correspondences and checks which most of the time are unnecessary. In addition I do not believe that there is any proven measures or mechanisms to shorten this time in this Bill, except if it was created intentionally and will be released also by intention. The bill is full of very bad issues which will affect some part of the permanent residents in the future ,I think. The hidden agenda is not far from this Bill at all. [/size][/size]

One misconception a lot of people have about the bill is that it promises faster processing(less than one year). This is just a assumption/expectation/projection that processing times may be faster. Time will prove that.

There are number of other things CIC may have done to improve processing times. Even if CIC had kept their pace for processing of application as they were in 2009 and before, it would have been very different now. And if they had increased resources proportionate with immigration number the processing times may have been close to 1 year.

Exactly, this is just an empty promise. Without taking actual measures to reduce the backlog (i.e. better processes, more manpower, better entry/exit tracking), the backlog will return in its full strength just after a year.
It is just similar to deleting your mailbox, hoping that all emails will never come back - but it is obvious that if the mail was addressed to you , it will always find its way back.

Yes, the discussion in my Opinion is not waste of time, still thousands of PR are not exactly aware of the situation. I am scare of "intent to stay" clause in the bill. This demarcation to create two class of citizens will make Canada a place where one class of Citizen will start hating other class of Citizen. No matter you make Canada a paradise but you will not like to live as a prisoner in Paradise, once Citizen you will not like to be discriminated, no matter even if you have no intention of going out of Canada ever.

I know students and Temp Workers are not targeting or interested in "intent to Stay" clause becoz at the moment they are targeting their immediate interest of time count before PR status, but once they become Citizen they will realize what "Intent to Stay" means. We are here for better future but to some we are here to become slave is misinterpretation of our commitment to Canada. We never signed any document where we agreed to be slave in Canada for ever, even become Citizen. We resigned from our jobs, we left our families, relatives and friends, we transferred all our belonging to Canada & finally we agreed to struggle in Canada. Now if somebody stand up and say either sign "Intent to Stay" or go back. Then I would say return my Job to me, return my lost years to my Family and Friends, I will go back. With due respect, I know some slave mentality people are agree to sign everything just to get the nationality but even among them some will retaliate to this Clause once they come Citizen.
