Hey Guys,
My boyfriend and I just got engaged last week and now I'm nervous. Our common law status goes through as of March and he is going to file for my sponsorship. Now the question is, as I return home to visit my folks at least once a month for 4-7 days and I'm nervous, as he is now my fiance which strengthens my ties to Canada. I obviously do not want to lie but am nervous. We plan on marrying in the next year and a half when our finances are more stable. (he's going full time and we are building our house) and don't want to wait until then to move in together on a more permanent basis as I pretty much stay there anyway and want to follow the rules. Anyone have issues with entry identifying their partner as such?

I have never had trouble getting back in from Europe, even as fiancees in between Visas

As long as you don't have a record of overstaying, you should be fine.
However, it is ALWAYS up to the customs officer looking at your passport that day, so there are never any guarantees.

Being from the US, might make it a little easier then coming from a country that requires a visitors visa

Wow thanks for the quick reply. I have a great record with the CBSA. I've never had a hassle really. I've never overstayed. I visit the US frequently as I have extensive family there (plus my grandmother is in fragile health). I know that it's up to their discretion, I just like reassurance a bit :D

I am by default always a bit nervous flying in, just the idea of being denied would be such a pain.
But i have always been met with courtesy.

Of course, ive had workvisas most of the time, but still...

Most of the time, the custom people are just doing what they are told.
Ask 1/2 questions, and let you through.

As McDutch said there are never any guarantees. My Husband and I been together 13 years just married April this yr. I crossed the border regularly for 8 years, we had kids, never overstayed and then one day I got an IO with a god complex who said I crossed to much assumed since we had children together I was living there with him and the children, which was not the case but, I crossed so much because I was taking the children to see their father (duh) she wanted to speak to him, I told her the he was hard of hearing and had problems hearing on a phone especially a cell phone and at work in a factory but she said if I didn't give her the number she was sending me back. So she calls and she asked him if I was living there, and he did what he always does when he can't hear something because he thinks it makes him stupid to say he didn't understand (men's ego eh?) but he replied yes so she ended up sending me home saying I was living there and gave me this ridiculous list to show proof before I could enter again. point is always be prepared don't lie and even if your not lying don't let them get you upset cus they think when your upset your hiding something, just tell them your crossing because your working on your PR application and planning a wedding it shows you intend to do things right. GL!

WOW! That sucks! But, as a hearing impaired woman, I do the exact same thing! Hubby had an issue at customs in the Ottawa airport and a VERRRY British guy came up to me to ask me questions about hubby. I got the first few questions but then he started talking faster and I was getting confused and lost. Told him I was hearing impaired and he stopped being a jerk (not looking at me, talking fast, talking quiet). Apparently Hubby told them I was hearing impaired and he was TESTING me. ugh. I'll never want to see that guy again for as long as I live!!

But to OP, Just be prepared. Have your rental agreement or something that shows your strong ties to the US. You may not need it, but it's better to have than to be denied and have to turn around!!!
