Me (M, Canada), and my Fiancee (F, USA) are planning to get married soonish, and will be creating and submitting our application for me to sponsor her to be a PR up here in Canada. Quick question (sorry, I couldn't necessarily find an answer here through some quick searching).

She will end up taking my last name, but would we need to get all her documents changed to the new last name before submitting our application, or would it be okay to submit the application with her using her maiden name, and just get it changed while the application is being processed?

I guess in our heads the path is:
Get Married -> Submit Application -> Change Last Name
would that be okay, or would it have to be
Get Married -> Change Last Name -> Submit Application

Thanks!

either way is fine. Note that if she updates her passport before being approved, she MUST change her name with IRCC prior to being approved to avoid any issues during landing.

In that case, would we fill out the forms assuming her name will already be changed before landing? As she would be working to change her name on things, right after we get married and send in the application. So most likely it would be changed by the time she lands.

no, her name in the application must match the name listed on the Passport submitted with the application.

for application purposes, she only needs to show IRCC her name was changed on the passport. they don't need any other proof of her name changing, so once she gets her new passport back she can send a copy to IRCC and they will update the application information. if you submit an application with a name different than what is on the passport, then i suspect that will cause confusion, delay or the application sent back.

With the way they are operating now they will probably send it back

Get married - Submit App - Get PR - Then change last name

Are you replying to the part about "if you submit an application with a name different than what is on the passport, then i suspect that will cause confusion, delay or the application sent back." or the part about sending the new info once the passport gets changed?

For me I think it would be easier to change her all her documents with her new last name before submiting your application. That is what we did and it was easier ;)

hmm so then when we get married, are you suggesting she not take my last name, and we just hold off on last name changes until after she's up here all together, or?

they don't send applications back when someone changes their name, so the poster is most likely referring to submitting an application with a different name than what is listed on the passport.

actually, from experience this is NOT the easiest path to take when changing your name. if you do this, then you also have to get a new pr card, which can take time and costs money to do, and your PR Card/passport won't match until you receive the new one - which can lead to issues in itself. it is way easier to change your name before being approved and landing as a pr, so your initial and FREE PR card has the new married name on it. doing it prior to approval only requires a name change in the passport.

hmm ok, thanks much for the information, I really appreciate it!

I guess another question I had (similar, also about passports), would be about my passport. so I'm a canadian citizen (have been since birth). My passport renewal time is coming up. If we submit the application, and then I get a new passport (renewal) would I need to update them at all? there would be no name changes or anything, just expiry change and passport number I guess (assuming that changes).

No you don't need to update them with yours as you are the sponsor. Word of advice if you havent already, photo copy all your pages with port of entry stamps and bio metric page before you send it in to renew it.

I already scanned all the pages with stamps, and the main page with my info, in a high resolution, so I can print them if I need to.
Thanks for the help!
