Hello Members,

while I focused to understand the requirements for Citizenship grant application and to support my spouse’s application accordingly….I somehow lost sight of understanding the PR renewel process for myself and therefore kindly seek input from you.

1) Let’s say I became a landed immigrant on 1st May 2017. Is this where the 5 years cycle starts in which you have to spend at least 730 days in Canada?
2) Let’s say my PR card is showing expiry on 4th July 2022. Does it mean the earliest I can date the PR renewal application would be around 7th Oct 2021 (I.e. 4th July minus 270days)
3) based on the above, if I want to submit/sign/date my application on 7th OCT 2021, does it mean I would have to have spend minimum 730days in Canada for the period 1st May 2017 to 07 Oct 2021?
4) assuming my current PR cycle runs from 1st May 2017 to 1st May 2022, when exactly would the new / 2nd PR renewal period start/end and in case I file for renewal on 07 Oct 2021 and receiving the new PR card within the latest stated processing time?

thank you.

1. Yes.
2. You can apply within 9 months of expiry
3. Or be able to complete 730 days before 01/05/22
4. It really doesn't matter, as the 730 are a "rolling" 5 year period. CIC looks back 5 years, to determine if you have met the RO.

Thanks, 1-3 is clear then.
Regarding 4 , I still struggle to understand the new rolling period. When would that start ? Is it simply from 1st May 2022 to 1st May 2027 ?

Five years before the date you signed the application.

The five year rolling period is at any point in time (except in the first five years after landing because less than five years).

Eg In July, 2022, the five year period is from July 2017.

There is no start date for the new period. No - it's not May 2022 to May 2027. It's a rolling requirement. That's why the word "rolling" is there. That means that at any given time going forward you must be able to to look back at the previous 5 year period and have spent at least 2 of those years in Canada. So it applies every day going forward. Every day going forward you must be able to look back at the previous five years and have at least 2 years that were spent in Canada.
