Currently, I live in US on H1B visa working in a tech company. I am planning to apply for Canada PR for a backup plan although I don't have any plans to move to Canada as of now. My wife is on H4 visa. I have few questions:
1. Do we need to move permanently to Canada after getting the PR approved?
2. For how much time the PR will be valid? Do we need to get it renewed after some set of years?
3. Can I live and work in US on H1-B even after I have Canada PR?

1. No.
2. PR card will be valid for 5 years. You need to live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 years to keep your PR status.
3. Yes. But again, you need to live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 years if you want to keep your Canadian PR status.

@scylla, thanks for your reply. So, if I don't live for 2 out of 5 years in Canada, then, will the PR status of me will be lost? Can I apply again in future? And if yes, then what will be the procedure next time?

Only PR cards expire ,PR status can only be revoked or renounced.

You need to be in Canada for a minimum of 2 years in the 5 years from initial landing then after that initil 5 years be prepared to show 2 years in any 5 years preceding every time that you reenter the country.

If you fail the residency obligation then every time you enter the country you could be reported leading to your PR status being revoked subject to appeal.

You cannot by the way renew a PR card from outside of Canada so keep that in mind.

Sure if you lose your PR status you can apply again assuming that you qualify based on the requirements at that time. Having previously held PR status should not impact being approved again one way or the other.

Generally recommended to not renounce, give up, PR status unless there is no other choice given nobody can predict for example whether anyone would be reported at the border. Although once the residency obligation has not been met then applying to renew a PR card may well end up with PR status being revoked.

Thanks for the reply Bs65. So, it looks like for me, maybe its not the good time to apply because in my mind, as of now, I don't have any plans to go to Canada. I was just thinking because of the worries about US immigration and take it as a backup plan. But if I have to live for at least 2 years, then I feel it may not be a good idea as I cannot live in Canada for two years.

If you don't have any plans to move to Canada in the next few years, then it probably doesn't make sense to apply. Keep in mind that it's going to become more and more difficult to qualify for Canadian immigration the older you get.
