So, I met my Canadian husband online in Feb 2009. After months of friendship, he proposed in Dec 2009, and he traveled to Jamaica to be with me and get married in May 2010. We had a beautiful wedding ceremony in June, and decided to start the process of getting me to Canada in July.
Someone, I have no idea who, told him it would be easiest if we applied for a TRV, then once I arrived in Canada to visit, start proceedings to apply for permanent residency. So off we went, I applied for a visa, we made plans to leave Jamaica, and then BAM! My visa application was refused, they didn't believe I would return to Jamaica, etc etc etc. And apparently, my perfectly legitimate marriage was one of the things that counted against me.
So we started looking into the process of sponsorship and permanent residency application. Only for our eyes to be opened wide to the realisation that this was not going to be either easy or quick. We are looking at (dear God) years of waiting, of running around to get documents and proof and evidence, and paying money before we can be together in Canada. Including apply for a police record from the FBI because I lived in the US for 18 months when I was 18 years old.
Suffice it to say, I am feeling very angry, very depressed and very tired right now, and we have not yet begun to scratch the surface of this process. I look at all of this and I wonder...everyone usually complains about the US process, how demeaning it is supposed to be. All I know is, I have a US visa that will not expire anytime soon with many close relatives residing there, and yet the Canadian government won't trust me to visit my husband in his native country.
