Okay, so as promised--

I'm a US citizen and have been living in Montreal, so I figured the easiest way to land would be to go and flagpole around the border. My girlfriend (who is a Canadian) and I got a Communauto car and drove down to the border at St-Bernard-Lacolle on Thursday evening. Since it was a weekday night, it was completely deserted--the US border guard didn't even give me the refusal paper (probably because I'm a US Citizen) but just told me to turn off and circle back to the Canadian crossing.

When I got to the Canadian border guard, I told them I was there to land as a permanent resident. They looked at my passport and told me to go park in a certain space in the lot and go inside the building.

Again, since it was a weekday night, there was almost nobody there. I went to the counter and told them I was there to land as a permanent resident. She asked me for:

  • My CoPR
  • My passport and current work permit
  • My CSQ (DON'T FORGET THIS!)
  • Proof of funds--I didn't know I had to bring this, but I brought up my bank balance on my phone and she just wrote down the number.

She had me look over the CoPR and asked me if there were any mistakes. I told her the last date entered, first date entered, and place of last entry were all wrong. She said "oh, that doesn't matter." She then asked me to read the two questions on the CoPR form ("Have you been convicted of a crime..." and "Do you have any additional dependents...") and write down the answer and put my initials next to the answer. She also asked me to write down my current address. I said no to both, wrote down the address, and then she told me to sign and date both CoPR copies. I did it and then she had me sit down while she did some processing.

After a couple minutes, she called me back up and told me that I was a permanent resident! She gave me a little talk about my rights as a PR and what I needed to do to maintain my status, and then said that they would mail the PR card within 6-8 weeks. She also said I would need to call the RAMQ to modify my status for Quebec Medicare.

...then, she asked me if me and my girlfriend would like a picture next to the Canadian flag, which she took for us :)

Overall it was a really easy process--and what a relief!
Thanks al_s for sharing :) Seems like it was a smooth process! All the best for your new life as PR of Canada :)

Hi guys,

I finally received my "Ready for visa", aka PPR, email on 4/30/2015 - one year to the day after they received my application.
My status has been "Application Received" all along. Only today (or maybe yesterday) did it change to Decision Made.

Good luck to all those waiting and Congrats to those who reached the end of this leg of the journey.
Congrats Mido! :) I hope it will take me not more than a year to get mine! On a related note, did you file your application from within Canada? because I've seen that it was mostly for people who filed their applications from outside Canada that they didn't receive the "in process" update, so just wanted to verify.

Hi edb_mtl,

I hope you get your PPR very soon. My application was received 3 weeks after you, so I need you to get your PPR so that my turn comes :P

jad_montreal did they requested RCMP certificate for you? I'm waiting since februrary when I sent the RCMP certificate, and paid RPRF on January. Since then I have no news :(
June will complete 1 year

I also don't undestarnd why in CIC site says 20 months for processing time.

edb_mtl, I have the same status as you. I sent my RCMP on early feb and after that I heard nothing. One year has already passed for me, as I am april aplicant. These guys at ottawa are so slow. Seems to me it is on purpose. My name is DSO on tracker by the way

No, they didn't ask me for one.

I think the 20 month period is more of an upper bound value. Even last year, when most of the applications were taking 8-12 months, CIC website said 18 months for processing time. A small number of applications take up to that time, but the vast majority will take less (sometimes significantly less) than 20 months.

From the tracker, you can see that the average processing time from application to PPR is about 350 days, which is less than a year. Like Jad said, the 20 months is the time CPC Ottawa has taken to finalize 80% of the applications. Most applications take much less.

Unfortunately, for me it's been 16 months since AOR and my application is still being processed. I hope you guy will not go through what I went through.

Oh, dear! Did you order GMCS notes to find out what the hell is going on there? 16 months since the AOR...so I guess that'd be about 18 months since you filed your application? You should have gotten your PR like half a year ago...
