I am an American - should I just get the FBI clearance and see if they ask for state? Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks

If you only send the FBI, and wait to see if they ask for a State clearance, you risk delaying processing of your application because, if they want a State clearance they're going to send you a letter requesting it, give you 90 days to reply, and put your application on a shelf until after that 90 days is up. It's called a "bring forward date" and it's a bad thing! I always say: anything you can provide upfront that will keep them from having to contact you and ask for additional information is a step towards faster processing. Control the delays on your end . . . don't give them any opportunities to set your file aside.
