Sponsorship approval is sent by CPC-Mississauga, signifying the stage 1 approval and the transfer of the case to visa office for further processing. The sponsor normally receives an email notifying the Unique Client ID (UCI) of the sponsor, and File Number.

AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt) is sent by the Visa Office when receiving the permanent residency application from CPC-M. It does not mean they start processing it; it just means they received it. The notification is normally sent to the applicant and gives another UCI (this is for the applicant), and the same File Number as what the sponsor has received. Some people however have never got an AOR and the case jumped straight to In Process or even later stage like Passport Request (PPR), etc.

Anyone knows whats the difference between AOR and Sponsorship Approval? Should we get both or either one of them is fine from CIC?

I believe the both are different.

Sponsor Aproval should be received by the sponsor.
AOR should be received by the applicant.

I'm seeing the update date as Feb 7 now but it's still jan 3. Everyone else seeing feb 7?

No I have not even received my AOR. They are still working on January applicants ...
