Ok then what kind of visa is it that is put in the passport?
It's a single-use immigrant visa. The immigration officer will usually cancel it out at the same time that they place the entry stamp in his passport and welcome him to Canada :)

ETA before posting - it's not a TRV. It's very permanent :). At first glance, the format may look very similar but the visa type field is essential and proves he's an immigrant :). And, they place it in the passport so the immigrant has a visa that grants you authorization to travel to Canada on commercial means of travel (visa-exempt folks don't need it because airlines, etc will allow them to board without a visa; also, the change in procedures means the border immigration office just needs to use the CoPR, not visa)

That makes more sense.

So the airline will want to see the visa in the passport? I have never traveled with someone who isn't visa exempt.

I'm worried about US security at the airport for other reasons...*sigh* I know we won't go through US customs but I'm still so stressed.

Typical procedure for international flights is: upon check at the airline counter they make sure you will be admissible at your destination. That means they will ask to see your passport to make sure you have one and your visa (or if you check-in at a kiosk they will ask you to swipe one at a time). If they don't find it on their own and they ask for it, just show them the visa in his passport - it conforms to the specs of a Canadian visa so the airline is covered (if they allow someone to arrive at the border who is not admissible and they didn't check they can get major fines and don't get paid for the flight back once the person is not admitted).

As someone with a recently approved PR your husband poses no risk to the airline so you're fine on that front.

I had no idea! I was wondering what would happen to people who get there and can't get in. Makes sense that they would check.

DM = Decision made
COPR = Confirmation of Permanent Residence - this is the document you get when you're approved (in addition to the visa in your passport if you're not from a visa-exempt country)
Thanks!!

What is TRV?

OK so my wife is in the Philippines.

What is she expected to get when she sends her PPR? What's this about visa-exempt and not? What do each receive?

Thanks,

-TS...

Citizens of countries like the US don't need a visa to get in Canada to visit. Obviously they can't work but they can get in without a visa. Citizens of countries like Mexico and China need visas. Phillipines too I am sure.

Visa exempt just got the COPR paper - Confirmation of Permanent Resident. Nonvisa exempt like my husband get a very pretty visa glued to a page in the passport plus the COPR.

Not sure about Manila procedures but I think they get PPR soon and then approval after. For Mexico you get approved first then PPR. But I think Manila is pretty fast.

Hey Kanika,

according to the spreadsheet, 2 people from February have received their COPR - you can check more if you want with the link here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Alz5rxujMsIGdFR3WGszYzduZDZsXzh1cTFLNWx5aFE#gid=0

Good luck!

It is a nice start to the week, definitely helps since I started working at a crappy call centre last week which is super depressing lol so this means DH can work soon and not all the pressure is on me anymore!!
