I agree, the lack of communication is the worst part of the process. Perhaps if we were kept better informed, it would be easier, who knows? I am sure there are concerns with maintaining the integrity of the process, what with the background and security checks that must take place, but at the same time I do believe more could be done to keep sponsors and applicants apprised of progress. Everything is a trade-off, I guess. They say they are busy working on the files, and the more information they have to give you is the less time they have to perform the actual work, but I doubt that accounts for the wide disparities in processing times globally and within individual offices.
It's also a crapshoot, as you might get a diligent officer who is fully cognisant that (the majority of) such files represent genuine spouses wanting to build a life together, or you might get the bureaucrat who cares only about his salary and next promotion and getting the absolute minimum necessary done in order to claim both.
My solution? Find something else to do in the meanwhile, so you don't drive yourself and your spouse crazy.
