It is definitely mind-boggling. I am sure there is a way to do this faster. Either they are lazy, or lack the will. No other country takes this long.
Screw them!!!

Looking at the timeline...Its almost half a year for worlds most advanced and sophisticated police force to give a police certificate...Unbelievable..

When did you call them?

I called them yesterday (01/20/16) evening 4pm (EST). They received my file on 10-12-15. Looks like a month or more of waiting.

If you see any US policy (Tax,immigration,security etc)..They are not in so much favor of their people moving out of US -> So, little to no investment on such things like police certificate. Unfortunately we are caught in this trap.

On the contrary, in the final step of US green card, they have a requirement of background check by FBI...Its initiated by USCIS and typically is finished in a week!!!

I think CIC is also to blame in this situation. The FBI gives priority to requests through channelers, which are completed within days. If a company can be approved to submit requests for information to the FBI, then I suppose the Canadian government could also strike a deal with the feds to request and receive information on candidates from them. After all, doesn't CIC have a similar arrangement with New Zealand? I think CIC just doesn't care enough to do the same with the U.S.

My credit card was charged today. My finger prints reached them on SEP 30 - 2015

They are taking close to 4 months to process the cases.

Actually, it seems that the Canadian authorities already have access to some kind of US database:

Canadian border officers have access to the NCIC which is a national database kept of all criminal convictions in the United States. Upon presentation of a passport or enhanced drivers license, the database can be accessed, this is how the Canadian border officers know about arrests, charges and convictions for offences in the United States.

And NCIS is part of the FBI! So that begs the question: why the hell would Canada still require US FBI check, if they can already access a database? Unless NCIS is not comprehensive (not including information pertaining to non-US residents), or that they are bound by contract not to conduct searches for immigration (rather than visit/business) purposes.

In any case, this 4-month wait is unjustifiable in this interconnected age. But they (FBI and CIC) just don't give a f$ck!

CIC are aware of the delay from the FBI side, They will give you a first extension that`s for sure.
However, the question remains, anyone got a second extension ?

This is the pertinent question. Website says 13-15 weeks processing but anecdotal evidence (as posted above) suggest close to 15-16 weeks. Hence CIC's second extension (60 more days) may not wok out in many cases. And that's with the expectation that FBI doesn't reject the fingerprints submitted. What a mess.

Yea. May be in a week or so FBI will update the processing time as 16-17 weeks

They may be closed because of the storm hitting the East Coast today. Many gov't offices, businesses and schools are closed.
