Hello,

I'm from the US but currently in Canada with my husband. We are almost done our application for my Canadian residency but I still need to have my finger prints done, is this something that must be done before sending our application is submitted or does the embassy request this later? Also, I have not had my medical exam done yet as I was told I could wait until it is requested so i am wondering the same about the finger prints. Does anyone have any insight into this? Thanks! :)

hi,
to clarify, you don't send your fingerprints with your PR application. You have to send your fingerprints to the FBI, who will then run a background check on you and process a report for you to send to CIC.

Right now, it's taking 12 weeks for the FBI to return reports. Because of this, it is ok to not send it upfront in your applciation, and to send it in when it's requested after sponsor approval. Also, since the wait for a record had increased, it's recommended to send in the application to the FBI as soon as possible, so that you will have it ready to send to CIC when it's requested. Generally, CIC only gives a certain amount of time to comply to requests, so it would really suck for you if you waited until they requested it and it will take much longer than the deadline they gave you.

To order your FBI record, follow the instructions here:
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks

Yes, you can also not submit your medical exam upfront, and wait for it to be requested. Just like above, you want to get it done as soon as possible so you don't run into delays down the road. Also, you can get your medical done in Canada, you don't have to wait to return home to get it done. it's also far cheaper to get it done in canada.

Thanks for the info! I of course am having both done asap but I was worried if I did not send everything at once it would be considered an incomplete application causing greater delays. Since they stress sending a "complete" application I wanted to make sure of this because we would like to submit our application as soon as possible since I am pregnant and wanting to sign up for healthcare before the delivery (June). Plus, we are ready for this process to get started, we have had so many hang ups waiting on documents from New Jersey (where I am from) so now we have almost everything, finally! :)

no, not submitting medical and fbi record upfront won't cause your application to be considered incomplete. however, not submitting them may cause delays in processing.

just an fyi, if you are pregnant, you may not be able to complete the medical exam. one piece of it is a chest xray to rule out tb, and generally, pregnant women can't get this done, so cic won't approve the application until after the baby is born and you can get the xray done. if this is the case, it may be a good idea to mentally prepare for your application to take longer than the norm.

True. I think you were one of the people who responded to a previous post I wrote and you mentioned being able to apply for healthcare after submitting the application. Do you know how that works exactly? Do I have to show proof of sending in the application? I was surprised to hear you could even sign up for medical if you are not yet a resident of Canada..

it depends on which provence you are talking about, i think alberta is the only provence that allows visitors to receive health care.

yup. Alberta is the most lenient while Ontario is most strict.
