Hello,

I received an envelope with the results of my Background Check from the FBI. Now, the envelope says CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION, and my name, should I open it and send it in another envelope or should I just send it as is (sealed in the envelope it came)?

Also should I wait until they request it or should I send it now?

Thank you.

i'd recommend opening the envelope so you can see what the record says. it does not need to be submitted in a sealed envelope.

it is probably best to wait for it to be requested, since not submitting it upfront is a new part of the application process.

I haven't reached this step in my husband's PR application and I'm new to this process so please double check this. In any case in which I have obtained a police certificate, it always stated that a sealed envelope must be submitted to the third party who is requesting this, so advise submitting a sealed copy. But double check with other people who have gone through this stage of the application.

this is very poor advice. again, it is not required to submit the record in a sealed envelope. there is no reason at all an applicant should not be able to open the report and see what is being reported about their criminal history. a person should ABSOLUTELY open the envelope prior to submitting the record, unless otherwise specifically instructed by IRCC.

You don't submit the FBI report in a sealed envelope. When it's time to submit it, you'll probably have to scan it in and upload it via MyCIC. I used the old application forms, but I also had to send CIC an updated version. That was scanned in and submitted via Case Specific Enquiry.

The reason the envelope is marked confidential is for YOUR privacy, not because it's a secret or something.

Like I said, please double check as I am not sure and haven't reached this stage in my husband's PR application.

As a physician, I have submitted several of these at several points in my Canadian training/employment and while applying for a medical license in various provinces and it was always stated that the police certificate needed to be sealed and submitted directly to the third party requesting it.

I realize this is a different situation, so hence the caution with my initial post. Its good to know that you are allowed to open this document.
